Hi Citizen Kate!  I soak my (pole) bean seeds for about 8 hours before planting....they germinate really well then.  Also, on the basil abundance, when I am lucky to have a great basil year, I have chopped it, mixed with water and poured the slosh into ice cube trays and frozen them.  Then, take out, portion, and wrap really really well with heavy duty foil and freeze!
