Kauairosina - SFG in Kauai
Here is Rosina's garden :
Collin feeding Gracie, our first and present pet chicken bugs from inside banana stalk. Gracie follows me around the garden and then waddles back into her enclosure to get plump on scratch. She is about 5 years old.
Chrysalis of Monarch butterfly on Milkweed plant.
Wing beans. Grow profusely and not a favorite. But would be valuable in case of famine.

Magenta Lettuce. My favorite. Colorful and crisp.
Lettuce and cauliflower. We have been harvesting 8 to 10 cauliflower heads. Just wonderful.
Eggplant and baby breadfruit, which we treat like artichoke hearts.
Two of our many cabbages. We have been making sauerkraut. Yummmmmy!

Many mahalos (thank yous) for posting these Sanderson. I will send more. We have been more than blessed with lots of rain and think of the Californians when we get so much our property is too wet to mow.

Do you have any sauerkraut-making recipes to share? Not the process itself, but rather any good seasonings you like? So far, I've only tried dill and coriander.
Another couple weeks, and it will be time for me to start making kraut, too.

We are being remiss about storing rain water. Read a fine article about resilience versus sustainability and rain water is the category where we fall short. As you know there are so many pressing duties that these things fall between the cracks and a forum like this is a good reminder.
About kraut: we have tried several recipes and so far prefer the plain nothing else added ones. However, that can change as we evolve in our kraut making skills.
I plan to take and send (to Sanderson) some photos of our over grown sfg beds. One darned cabbage over leafs each square foot on its side so one cabbage crowds out all the other veggies.

So happy that you like them. It has been very frustrating not to be able to post pictures since I really love seeing everyone else's and I am so very delighted with our results. We have a fine administrator in Sanderson who is willing to go the extra miles so we can see them on this forum.

Yes, we grow breadfruit trees in case the boat don't come but the mature ones are pretty darned starchy, although tasty, so we continue to look at how to incorporated the babies into our foods, especially stews and the like.

No, I don't have a particularly green thumb. I have just been privileged to live with others who were good at teaming up in gardening. My late husband was a master at making compost and my current Ohana plays well together in the garden.
I just avail myself of all the resources around me and have been fortunate to have so many in my lifetime. My father was also a gardener and I inherited some of my love of fresh things from him.
One of the things I like about gardening and cooking is that your never stop learning new ideas.
BTW - Never in my lifetime had I grown cauliflower and broccoli the way we are doing now. What a delight!
Mahalo for asking.

I am constantly amazed. We have to somewhat ignore tradition and just try things. Sometimes they work, sometimes not. I truly live in a paradise!

I do have photos. I just have to make a time to send them to Sanderson. Coming soon to a website near you. Thanks for asking.
BTW - I am having some work done on our little house (the name of it is Nanea, means serene, ha!) and the wife of the contractor expressed an interest in the gardens so I got on Amazon and, unbeknownst to her, have sent her Mel's book. Only $15 with Prime, no shipping. Such a deal!

Thanks so much Sanderson. There is no rush. It might be Sunday or Monday before I send you the pics. You know. Life is what happens when you're planning other things.

And you thought I meant I didn't have enough time. That too.

Many thanks Sanderson for posting the photos. I sent them to myself also and did not get them.
A couple of things. The orange on the cauliflower does not show up. Don't know what can be done about that. .
What I am asking is what do you all think is causing the purple cauliflowers to fracture like that? lots of different buds and bitter.
Even the "head" of the purple is not lovely.
More questions than answers these days.
