Satisfaction

Do you ever have one of those times when you have done a hard hours work in the garden, then sit down with a cup of tea of coffee and survey what you have just done and feel so good about it?

I am having that experience right now, as I have finally finished mowing 90% of the lawn , just a bit more to do that is out of sight,   enjoying a cup of tea and actually sitting down on my home made plank and log seat and looking at the garden and noting how everything seems to be coming along nicely.

All the little shrubs and trees I took cuttings of last year are making progress to get established; nine bark, flowering crab, some perennials; the grass is a deep green
with little flowers all over it , the blueberries with lots of new growth, the very old apple tree a mass of blossom on the few branches it has left, and for the moment my neighbours vehicles are out of sight as they are at work. 

I have a lovely view of Mt. Sentinel that looks over our city and seems to appear in so many photos.  It is not a spectacular mountain, just a rounded hump that is in the background that unfortunately cuts the morning sun from my home by about an hour. Until I cut down my trees I could not see this hump but now I have a new view and it is pretty nice.

Have you thought of grafting a few different apple varieties on the lower part of the  old apple tree, so you get three or four varieties through the season off the one tree ?
 
If not , spring is a good time to get grafting done , you only need a sicon about a foot long to do it .

This poor old apple tree has been there since I moved in and to my shame I have never, ever, done anything for it.  It was old when I got there, and each year bits have fallen off it  and the few years when it has apples it is loaded with thousands of tiny green apples.

Last year when I had a load of wood chips I decided to put down paper, compost and about four inches of chips to see what it would do.  It grew loads of healthy looking leaves and this spring blossomed well. As it only has two branches left, I will space the apples to see if I get any good ones.

Unfortunately it is on the nine feet of land that my neighbour thinks should be his but he said it would cost $7,000 to have it surveyed.  He parks his truck with the wheels right on the boundary line with the back hanging over what I consider the boundary, so I am not doing too much in developing it until the matter is resolved. He did have a high-paying trucker's job but was let go a in March and has only just got a local job which is not as well-paying so there is no possibility that he will be able to get around to it.

I think I will treat myself to one of these four-apple trees when I go out with my friend this week. Or at least look into it.
