Yay for spiders
I was just outside planting more beans and squash and corn because I've only had one corn seedling show so far.... and was marking my planted seeds with old hydrangea twigs.
I was distracted for a moment, then looked back... and there was an extremely small, light green spider, already hooking its second (third?) line between two of the twigs I'd just put in. Too small to get a photo with my phone (my eyes could barely focus on the web), but... neat!

Re: Yay for spiders
I love my preditory insects, and my lizards. I used to hate spiders, but since I've been gardening I welcome any insect that eats others. Ladybugs make me smile, damn aphids.

Re: Yay for spiders
I haven't seen any ladybugs (around here, I have heard of them biting and being a problem) but the ants are going absolutely berserk. Lots of nice earthworms, too!
We have a chickadee family that has built a nest in our townhouse neighbor's gutter, for the past N years. (We had gutter guards put in last year.) Not even sure it is the same birds anymore more, but they have been keeping a close eye on my gardening tomfoolery. Hopefully they will be helping!

Re: Yay for spiders
I am overrun with spiders of all types and sizes. I really hope they are beneficial cause they just make my skin crawl! I'm hoping I can somehow attract a toad or two to keep the spider population to a healthy minimum, but I've never seen one around here.

Re: Yay for spiders
A few years ago *something* bit me, don't know if it was a spider or not as was buried in heavy backyard leaf mulch. Sent me to the ER, though... do be careful!
Re: Yay for spiders
Get to know your spiders, for me its the brown recluse, and black widow, I watch out for those, the rest are cool with me.

Re: Yay for spiders
They're safe until they enter my house, at which point they survive only if I'm feeling generous
I was perusing the garden in search of the beasties that are ravaging my bean leaves and tomatillo leaves and I saw a baby praying mantis on one of my tomatoes! I was so excited I called my husband at work *giggle*
I think it's a yellow striped beetle that's getting my leaves. There are a few in a nice bowl of soapy water as I type!
