When to trellis peas Empty When to trellis peas

Post  BigTerp 4/13/2015, 9:52 am

My 2 squares of peas have finally germinated and are above ground. About an inch or so worth of growth. I have materials to make a 10' tall trellis for my back 4 squares which currently has peas and spinach. Once the spinach and peas are done they will have beans and tomatoes. So the trellis will be supporting these as well. Question is, when do my peas need the support of my trellis? At a certain height like 6" or 12"? Just trying to figure out how close to the top of my SFG I need to have my trellis started. Planning on assembling it this evening. Thanks!!

My peas start trellis grabbage at about  3" or 4".  Otherwise they would just blow over.

I put the trellis up when I plant the seeds, because if I don't I may never get back to it. If the lowest string is within a few inches of the bed, that's just fine.

What kind of peas did you plant. Most garden peas these days don't need a trellis more than 4 foot high. I do a 3' trellis.

Thanks!!

I'm doing a 10' trellis because it will be supporting my beans as well once the peas are done.

Another question I have is do you setup the trellis at the back of the bed or across the middle of the squares that need trellising? My back 4 squares will all need the support of a trellis. Just peas for now, but then 2 squares of peas and 2 squares of tomatoes. The tomatoes I plan to run up the trellis with just 1 or 2 main stems. Using indeterminate tomatoes I plan to prune to keep them under control and growing vertically. I'm thinking I should run my trellis twine across the middle of those squares so my peas and beans can run up the front and back of the trellis.
