Hello Square Foot Gardeners.

I am new to SFG. I have built a raised bed and filled it with Mel's Mix. I have transplants growing for my peppers, Melons, lettuce and tomatoes. All other squares will be directly planted by seed.

Could you please provide feedback on this plan?

Thanks!!!

Command,  Welcome to the Forum from California!  glad you\'re here  Looking at your chart, it looks like you are trying to follow the SFG planting guides.  Here's my 2 cents.  Cantaloupes can be 1 per square since they are trellised.  I don't know about trellised watermelons so I'll leave that for someone else to address.  Tomatoes have nice spacing.  I have my peppers  between the tomatoes, pruning off the lowest branches and suckers of the tomatoes and pinching off the peppers to make them bushier.  Another option is to stick a few lettuce, radishes, marigolds or other small plants, here and there between the tomatoes.  I would put the bush beans in a 4 square instead of a row so you can corral them with little fences. What are you thinking for the empty squares?

2015 Mid-Atlantic Garden Plan Empty Re: 2015 Mid-Atlantic Garden Plan

I'm in Maryland , not far from D.C., so I can give you some advice.  Plant your carrots now, chard in another week.  You mention that you have melon transplants, but melon seeds can be planted directly in your garden in our area.  Plant them between May 15 and June 15.  They like our hot summers.  Peppers do well here, but they do need some support.  I like to keep them all next to each other, and I use wire fencing (12" high) to surround them.   Your indeterminate tomatoes will grow in cages, but I like growing them on a trellis better.  Bush beans grow great around here, but they will tend to splay over into adjacent squares.   For transplants, visit Behnkes on Route 1 just north of the Washington Beltway.  Great place to buy transplants.  Good luck!!

Thank you both very much. My main concern was that the taller plants on the north end would be bunched too closely together.

I think I'll take Sanderson's advise about putting the peppers between the tomato plants. Probably the southern-most tomatoes.

Now, I've got to figure out my drip irrigation system Smile

Thanks!
