Cool, my county maintains public watershed data.  Realtime and historical averages.

http://ocwatersheds.com/rainrecords/rainfalldata/historic_data/

Season to date we are between 50-100% above average depending on which station you look at.

California's Drought - Page 22 Empty Re: California's Drought

Post  sanderson on 3/25/2017, 4:10 pm

Thursday was a beautiful day so we drove up to Millerton Lake and Dam and made a loop through the foothills to back home.  They are dumping water from the dam in anticipation of the spring snow melt.  First stop was at the downstream 2-lane bridge where I fished one day.  The fishing bank was underwater.  The power of the river going under the bridge was awesome.  Unfortunately, all this water goes north, collecting water from other rivers, and is dumped into the Pacific Ocean at San Francisco Bay.  Well, some of the water also goes south to Kern and Tulare (?) Counties via the Friant-Kern Canal.  Here are a couple of maps for those outside of CA. California's Drought - Page 22 Ca_riv10

CountryNaturals (Suz) lives near Redding, I'm in Fresno, Audrey is due east of me in the foothills.  Yardslave is in the foothills near the large bay 75 miles (?) south of SF, almost due west of Fresno.  CN's water goes south where it eventually ends up in Los Angeles and San Diego.  That giant Aqueduct is not shown on either map.
California's Drought - Page 22 Ca_riv10

In the next photo, the dark line is the Millerton Dam.  Where we are used to be underwater for a gillion years. California's Drought - Page 22 Drough10

In this photo, I'm aiming uphill to the "high water" [left horizon] and "low water" [center of photo] boat ramps.  You can see some of the fishermen trucks and trailors parked on the low water parking lot.  There is a little boat ramp servicing this area. California's Drought - Page 22 Drough11

I received 0.8" of rain in the last 24 hours!!  It really pounded down in the middle of the night, so I'm glad I'm holding off planting the summer seedlings.  They are back under their fluorescent lights.

I read yesterday that California is officially out of your drought cycle, but surely, it will take years for the water-tables to return to their usual highs?

I hope California continues to be stringent about water conservation in case the drought continues after this wet winter.

California's Drought - Page 22 Empty Re: California's Drought

Post  sanderson on 4/3/2017, 3:45 pm

The drought may be officially over but the farmers in the Valley are still not getting the water they need.  The Valley mountain rivers' waters continue to flow out to the Pacific Ocean. Yes, it would take years and years to restore the Valley water level to anything resembling decent. Another rain is expected this weekend. The night temps will be cool, so here I sit with all these seedlings. Do I plant them or hold off another week?

We were in the Sacramento area for a kiddie birthday and decided to take a side trip to the Folsom Prison area.  I know the dams are flowing to bring down the water levels in preparation for the mountain snow melt.  This is Folsom Lake and again we were surprised at how low the level is.  The boaters/kayakers had to go way down to launch their crafts.  There were some neat pieces of drift wood but it's a State park so nothing can be removed. Yea, now all you hear about is "flood risk" when the snow pack melts.

Sad that with everybody talking about drought being the "new norm" they've done what seems like zero planning for ground water recharge during our el nino years.

What about building more reservoirs, dams, and channels to divert water away from the Pacific Ocean and supply more water to the state of California?

Donna, I have heard with my own ears on the largest talk radio station in the Central Valley, "We don't need to grow our own food, we can get it from China."

Seriously...

It seems that few people that we elect to run our countries take the long-term view.  To me it is vital that every country in the world should do their best to be able to produce food to  sustain their population in the event that terrible things happen. What if China decides not to sell to North America?

During World War II Britain was on the brink of starvation only being able to provide less than 50% of their food. We had to rely on the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand to survive at great cost to the Merchant Sailors.

SFG is one way that can  help alleviate starvation.  With some SFG beds grown by every household, a few chickens, goats and rabbits etc and  cooking and preserving skills, that would help a great deal.  I bet that most of us here on this Forum have a good supply of dried, frozen and canned foods set aside.

We've gone from record-breaking drought to record-breaking rainfall in one season. We are now 1" over the all-time record which is huge. It's definitely feast or famine around here when it comes to Mother Nature. Shocked

Fresno City Council has increased the number of days/week for watering.

Nov-Dec-Jan-Feb-Mar: 1 day/week
April-May and Sept-Oct: 2x week
June-July-Aug: 3x week

Light rain last night and this morning. I'm glad I got a lot of plants set out.

California's Drought - Page 22 Empty Re: California's Drought

Post  sanderson on 6/15/2017, 3:24 am

We may no longer be in "drought" conditions but a big heat wave is coming.  Predicted for this coming Sunday through next Friday:

Fresno (central CA) 105-110*F
Sacramento (between central and No. CA) 102-104*F
Redding (No. CA) 101-111*F
Carmel Valley (Coastal Inland)  pleasant 70's and 80's  :-)
Long Beach (near LA) pleasant 70's and 80's
Palm Spring (So CA desert) already in the 100's with expected up to 116*F  affraid

With this heat wave, more mountain snow is expected to melt making rivers dangerous.  Oh, and the rivers in the mountains above central CA area, my area, will be drained out to the ocean. tongue

I guess the wild fires are to be expected after the bumper rain we received this spring.  Highway 41, west of Kettleman.  The Garza Fire.  California's Drought - Page 22 Drough10

Garza Fire smoke the next day from Kettleman City.  We had to drive in the plume and it followed us to Fresno.  The smoke! Cough, wheeze. Shocked  California's Drought - Page 22 Drough11

A few minutes east of Kettleman, just before Stratford, there was another fire in a fallow field.  Only this one was started by a car fire.  The driver had no choice but to pull off the road and catch the weeds, then field, on fire.  Poor guy was standing by his burned out hulk of a car. Sad  Only one fire truck needed.  The guys were hand howing/chopping around the perimeter.  They must have been dying in the 100*F heat in their outfits.

sanderson ... Those are crazy temperatures. Not sure I could take it but I expect it is a dry heat. When it gets into the high 80s along with high humidity here then I am finished. But having spent some time in Phoenix and Tucson I know even the dry heat can be totally overwhelming.

And it seems to be cumulative. We can take one day of it, but by the 3rd day we can hardly get out of our chairs. The good news is that our mornings are gorgeous. I always have at least an hour before it hits 80. The bad news is that Hubby has sleep apnea/insomnia and can't sleep well at night, so he can't get up early enough to take advantage of our beautiful mornings. Sad
