all because of SFG! Today I was at our Menard's where a 4 cuft bag is only $12.50. They only had one pallet left. The man I talked with was from building supplies where they order and stock it for the store. He said because of the huge increase in people making Mel's Mix, demand has gone through the roof and so has the cost from the supplier. He said they were lucky enough to place their order over a year ago before the cost spiked and that is why they can sell it so cheap but he said their cost is going up significantly on future orders. Vermiculite is sold in the building section to use with foundations, but gardeners are buying more now than contractors.

I thought the whole conversation was interesting and wanted to share. Anyone else heard this?

I havent heard it but I noticed it. I paid 8.99 two months ago, this weekend it was at 10.99. I wonder if it also has to do with that fire, or was that brand specific?

The Menard's in my area only carries vermiculite bagged for construction, which I had read might contain other ingredients (concrete?) and which is finer particles than coarse/glitter grade. The price was somewhere between $9-$12 a bag, but I didn't retain the info because I was hesitant to use that type of vermiculite, based on what I've read.

A large garden center about 20 miles away (the only place I've found familiar with SFG) has 3.8 cu. ft. bags of coarse/glitter grade for $28.99. I got a local garden center to special order 4.0 cu. ft. bags of coarse vermiculite for me (which I hope to pick up tomorrow) for $20.99 per bag.

Magwheels.

The vermiculite from Menards should have been labeled "Micaflakes" and is completely ok to use in the SFG. You are correct in that it is a finer grade, actually it is a variation of grades. All the bags I have gotten range from fine to coarse/glitter. Except one bag (the last one) it was almost all fine. But for the price, I'm not gonna complain.

I also got 4cu of vermiculite from a feed store for 20.99, so I plan on mixing the two.

Thanks for that info, Chocolatepop (that it's okay to use a finer grade of vermiculite).

I am an inexperienced gardener, and since my husband (who grew up on a farm and is an ag teacher but hasn't read the SFG book) is unconvinced that Mel's Mix is worth the expense or bother, I am intent on doing everything by the book this first time around in hopes of producing a beautiful, bountiful garden. Trust me I understant. I grew up in the city, hubby's family as far back as he can remember are farmers in midmichigan. His moms "garden" is an acre, for two people. She was unconvinced also... until harvest time. But if you think about it, Mels mix is potting mix (which we know stuff grows in) with compost (which we KNOW stuff grows in!)

Magwheels----Our Menards had the course grade in the garden section with all the soil. But it is stocked and ordered through the building department (go figure). They did say they had finer vemiculite available inside but I didn't even bother looking since they had the premium course grade.
