The SFG tells me to plant 8 plants per square but how much approx does that yield? Seed catalogs tell me 1/4 lb of seed yields 5.4 lbs of peas. If I knew about how many seeds were in 1/4 lb I could figure out the yield.

I disagree with that recommendation and sow way more than that with very good results.

The peas can be seen at the back of the bed.

Pea plants are notorious for occasional failure. If you only plant 8 plants and then 2 of them die, you are left with only 6 plants and few peas to eat. That is why I sow many, because I know a few of them will never make it to maturity.

I would say approx. 415 seeds for a quarter pound of peas.  One pound of pea seed is approximately 1660 seeds.

The last couple years, I've done 4 plantings of 40 seeds each (some snow peas and some shelling peas). For 2 people, there is not enough for storing for winter, and leaves me wishing I had planted more for fresh eating. This year I'll be planting 250+ seeds.

I agree with camprn about the spacing, and my planting looks similar to hers. Some pea seed packages say plant them about 2 inches in all directions.

I'm a numbers guy, and I've kept track of my yields for the last 8 years.  I average about 0.75 ounces of snap peas per plant.  I even counted the number of peas for a couple of years, and averaged 4 snap peas per plant.
