Three or 4 times a year we harvest and process our green onion patch usually from 4 to 6 sq foot of onions are all we need and we use alot.  For us its a fun activity.  Here is a report on February's crop.  This is one thing that we haven't bought any of in years all from our garden.    http://cappyandpegody.blogspot.com/2015/03/rotating-our-green-onions-or-something.html

I don't know why your link did not highlight.  I went to your web site, re-copied the address and posted here.

I am new to square foot gardening, this is my second year coming up.  I planted some onion sets that I purchased somewhere but after planting them I just kind of forgot them.  The bed has been abandoned over the winter.  Maybe I should go back there and look and give it another chance.

Cappy - what a beautiful, bountiful harvest.

I love my green onions and have a small patch (12" x 18") in one of my boxes.  It has been there for years.  Like you I use them in almost every thing I cook.  I usually just harvest the greens but sometimes pull the entire plant.  When I do I stick the roots with a little bit of the white back in the soil.  New plant.

Smile

BTW - they grow and I harvest year round.

My, My - learn something new every day - didn't realize that there is a particular onion that is what you all are calling spring onion or green onion.  I thought that the green-topped onions in the store were just baby plants of the larger onions.

This is a particular species, isn't it ,Allium fistulosum,  OK - so now I need to check out the seed displays in our stores or need to order some on-line because it sounds like something I want in my garden.

Thanks folks

Post  Cajun Cappy 5/16/2015, 5:08 pm

I posted this else where I think but I figured I'd share it here since its the season and all.  We grow our green onions around 9 months out of the year The dorment time is now.  In the next few days I will harvest them but instead of re planting the onion bulbs will summer in an onion sack in the closet and be replanted in early september.  Here is a post about one full cycle.  We havent bought them in many a year.

Hi Cappy,
Don't know why but I never thought of freezing onions. Always thought of them as a root cellar item, not too many of those down here. I tried some in the garden this year with OK results, nothing like you had.
I'll give it another try this fall.
 Thanks for sharing.

Cappy, The green onions in your blog is what I also call green onions. I started them from seed and they languished in a pot for months. A few days ago, I dumped the pot, gathered the poor things, separated them, gave their heads and feet a little trim and replanted them in replenished mix in the same pot. They have new shoots now. And, I don't even like green onions!

Hi Cappy,
Since we are basically the same zone what variety do you plant?
I would really like to do the same as you with a recurring onion harvest every year,
 Thanks
