Pineapples!
So excited to see that 6 of our 9 pineapple plants are either blooming or about to bloom and produce fruit! None of these plants are more than 15 months old, and I was told they won't produce for 3 or 4 years because I started these from pineapple tops rather than suckers. It's amazing how the right care can make a difference.
This is the pineapple shelves that I built this past summer. They take up so much space so I wanted them up and out of the way. They also don't take much water or attention, although I did fertilize them about 3 weeks ago with a citrus fertilizer that's also good for tropical fruit trees, and of course... PINEAPPLES!
(In case I did this wrong, I tried posting this in the "non-SFG" category.)

Thanks Marie! It all caught me by surprise this afternoon. And what a nice surprise! I really didn't expect them to produce so soon, nor this time of year.AtlantaMarie wrote:+1! Those look great, DStack! Congratulations!

Re: Pineapples!
Your welcome mschaef! They are basically bromeliads, and the only one that I know that produces fruit.mschaef wrote:I have never seen a pineapple bloom...till now. Thank you for sharing. They are beautiful.

Will do. A local Facebook friends says she has to harvest them early before the squirrels get them. She lets them ripen in a window. But here, my garden cats HOPE the squirrels just try! Hehehehe!Goosegirl wrote:Those are absolutely beautiful!!! You have to show us more pics as the fruit develops and your first slice!

How are pineapple outer covering for composting ? I've been adding quite a lot recently to my compost piles.
Try to chop them up when not frozen....Pile is cold not, however soon I expect to reset it.

Re: Pineapples!
Those are beautiful pineapple plants and baby pineapples and blossoms! What pretty colors! I never knew they were in the bromeliad family but after you mentioned that, I went ahhh yeah, that makes sense! You are doing a great job! I would love to be able to grow them here, but winter . . . At least we can enjoy them vicariously through your work.
