Freeze warning, not something we often see down here. Work kept me late so going to hope the frost stays a bit farther west of me. The tomatoes have finally started producing & the beans are at the top of the trellis. Funny is I think today is our last frost date. Camping at Rainbow Springs SP this weekend so I'll hope for the best when we get home.

I was actually kind of worried about this.  I saw something that said bring your pets and plants inside....I don't have outside pets, but I was wondering if I should actually be worried about my potted veggie plants that are on the patio.

The coldest weather stayed to the west, only dropped to 41 here. Hope the farmers were spared from the frost as well. I remember the damage from the big freeze in the early 80s. Dead citrus trees for as far as you could see.

If it was supposed to freeze or frost at your place then yes you would either cover your plants or bring the potted plants inside. Of coarse bringing them in means bringing all the ants that live in the pots inside also. Your patio could also protect the plants some from the coldest temps.
How cold did it get at your place?

I live in the Wellignton/Royal Palm area.  I'm not sure the coldest it got, the coldest I saw was 49.  I didn't bring anything in or cover it, but it all looked ok this morning.  They were like, screw your cold, we're veggies!  I dunno.  They looked fine.  I only double layered myself to walk the dogs at like 2 am so I"m sure it didn't get too bad.  But we are a bit west (also a bit south) from you.
How'd you fare up there?

We were camping at Rainbow Springs State Park over the weekend. Friday saw a low of 32 and Saturday a low of 39. Glad that wasn't my gardens low temp, our place saw a low of 41 far from what the weather man said we  would expect. No frost damage at our garden and happy to see some summer squash developing.
Hope to have a productive garden this year.

Freeze warning Empty 31 Degrees Saturday

Post  brianj555 12/4/2017, 6:40 pm

You guy’s have helped me keep my tomatoes alive through 3 frosts so far.  They were very light and I’m not sure if I ever actually needed to cover them , but I’m sure it didn’t hurt.  The temperatures here are projected to drop to 39 Wednesday night and continue to a bottom of 31 Saturday night.

You wouldn’t hurt my feelings if you said I were wrong, but I’m fairly certain my fall tomato crop has come to an end. I had a good run for my first try particularly with a cat 1 hurricane that came in the middle. I still have tomatoes from full grown and beginning to turn all the way to little marbles.  Probably 30 or a little more.what do I do at this point.  How would you suggest I proceed?  How do I go about closing the tomato shop down? Thanks for any advice.

Brian, You said it. You had a good year even though you started late. You learned how to protect your garden from winds and lowering temps. You are already planning for next year. So, how about harvesting the larger tomatoes and put the beds to sleep. Clean and store all of the equipment. It is December, after all.

I picked all the big green tomatoes last night when they announced the freeze warning. Learn to rest for a couple months so you don't get burned out. Look at catalogs, celebrate the holidays, toast yourself for a job well done. Freeze warning 3170584802

But he's in zone 9, Sanderson.

Brian, do you get snow? If not, or only a tad, I'd be temped to put up a couple of plastic hoop tunnels and plant a fall crop....just like a spring crop but better, as it will get sweeter when touched by frost. Lettuces, cabbages, kale, collards, broc, etc. Get them started under the plastic. Open it during the days that are 40's & up, and sunny.

But that's just me...Miss Totally Unmotivated At The Moment. Rolling Eyes

Well I’m very glad you mentioned that CC.  I have romaine and buttercrunch lettuce, 45 day cabbage, mustard, collard and carrots out there going right now. Will a freeze kill any of those??  It’s suposed to hit 31 early Saturday morning. No What a Face pale

Brian,  I'm also in a Zone 9.  All of those plants should do fine at 31*F.  My winter crops survived 28*F last winter.  I have pre-cut and labeled, 4 mil plastic sheets ready if the temps drop below 28*F.  The only thing is that I have to get up shortly after sunrise (8 am) or the plants will fry.
