Re: The SFG Journey - Mulched pathways and cinder block/brick SFG beds
Since I joined this forum, I've enjoyed looking at pics of different SFG designs. I searched google for images, and was amazed at the creativity gardener's have in designing their beds. It's mind boggling. Every combination of squares, rectangles, keyholes, and anything else you could imagine. Some people even use cinder blocks. Utilitarian, of course, but beautiful? Well, in this case, I think so. Cinder blocks turned into cinder...ella! If I thought I could lug that many cinder blocks to my back yard without killing myself, I might give it a try. But until then, I'll just admire these pics. I could never have imagined something this pretty could be made with cinder blocks.

WOW! That cinder block garden is GORGEOUS!

Re: The SFG Journey - Mulched pathways and cinder block/brick SFG beds
Hammock Gal,
At 68, I can still haul such blocks one at a time, or a few at a time in a wheelbarrow. They're what I'm using now for my berry beds in the side yard, as well as a raised bed for an apple tree. (I dug a hole but encountered lava rock about 14" down....)

Isn't it though? I wish I had the kind of imagination that could come up with a design like that. I always think of them simply as utilitarian, and I would never have imagined them curved like that. Genius!

Twice my post timed out. I will try again.
Lovely!
How many blocks did it take, 2 - holes or 4 - hole?
I would imagine that something like that in a front garden would never offend anyone and would be easy to keep tidy.

The cinder block garden is very pretty. However, it is over 5' at the widest and I wonder how they reach the centers without stepping into the planter. I know, cold water.
Re: The SFG Journey - Mulched pathways and cinder block/brick SFG beds
Here is some more cold water. The cinder block garden looks great. However, I have a concern about those cinder blocks between the paths and the lawn. Stepping over them looks like an accident waiting to happen ... at least for seniors.

Here I am with a bucket of warm water...remove the ones that you would need to step over, and make each section one block smaller. No?

Perfect! I just sent this photo to my mom. I'll have a garden in the middle of the back or front yard yet! HA!

Wow! Plus, all those hidey holes in each block could be filled with MM and a flower planted in there! Sunflowers, marigolds, nasturtium, you name it! Or herbs!

here's a picture of my poles on the ground without worries of grass or weed growing around them and entangling them.has55 wrote:update: I loved the mulched for my walking path, It has relieve so much unseen anxiety from preventing grass (nut grass and bermuda) from getting in my beds despite weed cloth. Nut grass is so challenging to keep out. Basically, the mulched pathway extended the SFG idea of o-almost no weeding idea to the garden area around the beds. It also allows me to put items on the top of the ground mulch like EMT, PVC, blocks, hoops, etc.. that I needed for a project, without the fear of grass growing thru or around the item causing me to move it to another place or store it and remove it each time I had to use the item, because i would need to cut the grass in that area.

The back looks like art work to me. However, what a nice bench it makes!

They used a Concrete Adhesive. They did not specify the brand, but there are lots of them. I used some from Lowes to make a 3-high brick ring around a tree for my DW to plant flowers.
