Hello everyone,

I live in Belgium. I started a SFG this year. I put some 'green lentils' and 'red beans', meant for eating in the ground in my little paper pots, as an axperiment. Now, not even a week later, I have some green lentil sprouts a few centimeters long. I'm wondering if I can put them out in the garden, and if they need a stake to grow on. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks a lot!

I haven't grown them myself, but some friends of our 'inherited' some lentils in the garden of the house they bought last year. The plants were about waist high and quite bushy...and I don't remember any stakes...they might need a stake to keep them from falling over, but I don't think they vine at all.

I think we're past the last frost dates (officially...goodness knows the weather the last couple of days might make you think otherwise!) so I think you'd be okay putting them out, especially if you cover them with a fleece at night. (I'm keeping mine covered just to keep them protected from the wind and rain this week.)

I want warm weather back...I don't want it to be winter any more. growing 'green lentils' in hardiness zone 7 Icon_sunny growing 'green lentils' in hardiness zone 7 Icon_sunny growing 'green lentils' in hardiness zone 7 Icon_sunny

(for the folks not in Europe -- we had temps at 25C -- that's 80F the end of last week. It's now highs in the low 50s and lows in the low 40s, with slate-grey skies and a drizzle that never seems to completely go away. Blech.)

growing 'green lentils' in hardiness zone 7 Empty Planting lentils: past last frost dates?

Post  Saartje 5/5/2010, 3:44 pm

Actually, here in Flanders, we have somethings called the 'Ijsheiligen' or the Ice Saints. They are a collection of five Catholic saints who have their name days from the tenth to the 15th of May, and it is said that you cannot put any frost-sensitive plants outside before the passing of the Ijsheiligen, so I'll go with that tradition and wait another week, before saying that all frosts have passed. But I'm sure I'm going to plant those lentils, if only to see what the plant looks like. I now have the red beans from my kitchen cupboard sprouting as well, this has been a fun experiment so far!

I just found out about the Saints du Glace a few days ago...hopefully, they'll be kind to me and my little plants!
