oh i need to share a pic - will take one soon - as soon as baby wakens and camera finishes charging . . .
we have spinach, several varieties of lettuce, arugula, cress, kale - all being harvested daily! such fun!
many other varieties are getting close to harvest, too!

what's up in my garden?
What's up in my garden? In Mn the gardening season started only a few weeks ago. I have broccoli, lettuce, onions, carrots, and marigolds coming up. The potatoes haven't poked up yet, and I'm wondering if something's wrong. Anything else will have to wait until after the baby is born in a few weeks!!

Well we are having an early and "picture perfect" Spring here in NEPA!
Today I planted: mesclun, Bibb lettuce, Romaine, Buttercrunch, peas(sugar snap for my boys) and cucumbers. I hope the weather cooperates for the cukes. I planted a "burpless" variety and one kind for pickles. I used 8 seeds for each and they are in my 4x4 boxes. Trellises soon to come. Will post pics as well.
Actually, my 9yo planted the peas and cuked. He also measured for the grid system to be put on.
I put burlap over the beds so the flocks of birds I get won't steal from the garden until sprouts come up.
Here's to hoping the bunnies stay out too! (I may be investing in temporary fencing)

WOW. EXCELLENT!
I was wondering about the shade around your tomato plants...have you had them in that location before and if so, did they do well? Seems like an awful lot of shade...?
Also, that is a LOT of lettuce! Hope ya'll love salad!

Re: It's May! What's up in your garden?
Yes the farthest back box does get some sun. I'm guessing it should get about 8 - 10 hours a day. I've never grown anything there so it's all an experiment. If nothing else it will become a lettuce bed if it's too shaded.
Re: It's May! What's up in your garden?
Nice pictures BettyAnn. I love the fact this is in your front yard! Is it on a slope too or is that just the picture?

oh it's definitely on a slope. i have the boxes as close to the edge of 'flat' area as i can. it's an interesting experience with harvesting because one has to be careful on the front edges where it's all downhill.
i'm hoping to move all my boxes to backyard next year - by then the kids will be old enough to leave my stuff alone - nd i am putting a bunch of boxes in the backyard anyway as my garden expansion, so i'll have a more traditional front yard next year, too - 'sides, i plan on having entire front excavated and graded so it'll be easier to sell property in august 2013. (we have it on calendar to sell the house then and move - either to columbus, ohio or to austin, texas.)
yesterday was just a nice rainy day so good for pics - no shadows and colors looked real vivid.

your garden sounsd lovely!
and i bet your kids are having a blast! just wait til you find a couple of weeds and ya'll start fighting over them. . . the kids catch on real quick to the 4/square; 1/square, etc adn everything not in it's place is game to pull - so i truly never have any weeds - the kids keep up on them, however, i will admit, they got a little too enthusiastic and pulled half my turnips, too, lol. that's allright though - we don't know if we even like turnips. . .

Thank you thank you! My 9 yo seems the most interested at this point. He listens to instructions and seems to have a better "knack" for this gardening stuff. lol! We have been gardening ever since they were tiny, only at a friend's house and IN THE GROUND. It was only good ONE year and then, only good for tomatoes. (I planted 50 plants and ended up canning over 300 qts...and giving the rest away! :O )
May I ask why you "have it on your calendar" to sell and move? Seems a shame to leave all those GORGEOUS beds...they become like old friend, huh? I swear I'm getting into a 12-step program soon, really, I am!
We do use our gardening for our homeschooling as well. I wonder if there are any of "those" people around?

Re: It's May! What's up in your garden?
if we move to columbus, the mel's mix is coming with me.
if we move to austin texas, i will sell the mel's mix.
the beds are all on landscape fabric so it's easily separated.
we're moving because we need to be closer to middle kid's school - wherever it will be. columbus is where he goes now but it's too far to drive for the next 18 years.
austin texas has a better deaf school than the one here in ohio. less taxes, too. also is warmer .. . . my endo is encouraging me to move to warmer locale . . .so we don't really know what we're doing, other than we're doing something in august 2013. that year will be the year we DON'T have a garden as we'll be relocating and i would cry at losing plants. . .
and sfg is what we did for schooling last year. i unschool homeschool my oldest, although i'm strongly considering a charter school this year for him so i can take care of some medical needs for me. (looking at the school as a babysitter for me). . .
so i guess i'm one of 'those' people.
my kid knows all sorts of stuff and he didn't sit down for any of it, *grin*.
oh yeah, and my kids are bilingual - ASL/ENGLISH. well, middle kid is ASL only, but the hearing kids are both . . .. husband is finishing up schoolign to change careers and be an ASL interpreter actually.

I have sprouts!!
Everyone's gardens look so great already. I really loved your video Tim. I just subscribed to your blog. You do an amazing job on it.
I wanted to post a quick update on my SFG. I have little sprouts! I'm so excited. I saw someone mention in another post that she feels like jumping up and down like a two year old because she's so excited about her SFG. That's what I felt like doing when I saw my little seeds sprouting today.

Nice, Blackrose! I have little sprouts too, just about like yours. So exciting!
Re: It's May! What's up in your garden?
Tony, I love the video! I love garden tours - thanks for sharing!
Today I planted fennel, common milkweed, and purple coneflower in my monarch bed. I added another row of carrots to the early spring garden, and we put a daisy in the kid's bed. I think we'll end up moving it, but she got it free at the civic garden center's sale, so she chose the spot for it.
I started some tomato seeds here at home. I'm horrible with seeds, but I am really excited to give these a try.
We also saw 3 gray tree frogs tonite and brought home several eggs! I can't wait to see the baby tadpoles! Yea!

ooh, PRETTY!
question for you. what do you 'do' with your arugula?
i was putting it in salads but i've now decided i don't particularly like it - too strong a flavor for my salads. . .
and i have 2 squares FULL of the stuff. ...

Re: It's May! What's up in your garden?
Yes I will put some in salads and I will make a pesto with it. There are several recipes on the net. The pesto can then be use as a spread on breads, on cooked pasta, or put on chicken and other meats and grilled. You can make a similar pesto with basil, almost the identical recipe. One batch takes about 3-4 cups of arugala, about 1/4 cup of pine nuts, 2-3 cloves of garlic or more if you like, and olive oil. Put the arugala, pine nuts, and garlic in a food processer and chop it pretty good. Then add olive oil until you make a paste to a spread, my wife likes it a little more oily. You can use it right away or freeze it. It only last a few days to a week in the frig we have frozen it and used it at later dates.

Cabbage worms!!!! Looks like I need to go patiently pick them off and trim up the plants. Everything else seems to be doing well. Radishes, beets, turnips, carrots, etc. Lots of stuff growing. Can't wait till the first days of harvest.

Re: It's May! What's up in your garden?
My grids are finally done and so is the mulch around all four boxes. I did a mix of natural wood mulch with two stone pavers and in the middle I did rubber mulch with rubber pavers. I think I will eventually switch out the wood for the rubber mulch, but didn't have the $ to do it all up front! I have some of my peas and beans in the garden. I have yellow onions in and my green onions are sprouting. In one of the boxes I have a banana pepper I got from the store. This past weekend I planted two types of carrots, spinach, mesclun, corn, and radishes. My tomato sprouts are getting bigger. I plan on transferring them to bigger pots soon, but wonder how big they should be before going in the garden?? Here are a few pics:
Re: It's May! What's up in your garden?
We are beginning to get warm weather in San Diego. It was in the high 70s this week, and things are beginning to take off. We are growing asparagus, artichokes, yellow and red onions, beets, carrots, bush beans, romanesco, watermelon, a few types of lettuce, basil, lemon cucumbers, bush cucumbers, zucchini, crookneck squash, eight types of tomatoes, eggplant, four types of peppers and radishes. All but the artichokes are in our SFG's.
General view of the gardens (and my son, Will)
Yellow banana peppers
Artichokes
Romanesco - keeping my fingers crossed that these won't go to seed
