If you live in, or near, zone 10, and you grow French tarragon, or have tried, I'd like to hear from you. This past year I've learned that Russian tarragon is pretty worthless, but can't find the French anywhere (unless as overpriced cuttings over the internet).  I'm tempted to try using grocery store fresh tarragon as cuttings.

I've  read that Mexican tarragon is a sometimes good substitute and it grows better here.  I'll try that for next summer, but if I'm going to attempt Frenchy, this is the time of year to find it as I plan my fall garden.

My heart is pretty set on Frenchy because I hear that it's great for companion planting, as well as in the kitchen.  But I'll settle for Mexican if I have to. Any advice?

I grow French Tarragon, but I'm not in your zone (except that I was born there--does that count  Wink ).  I can mail you some cuttings if you'd like for you to experiment with.

My plant has gone from nothing above-ground in the spring (it dies back in the winter here) to a currently 3x3 foot sprawling shrub, and that's only in a few months.  You might find that in your zone it might get huge, so I don't know about using it as a companion because it would likely shade out it's companions.  I don't have mine in the SFG because of that.

Anyway, let me know if you want some sprigs sent your way.  OH, I know!  I'll trade you for one of your yummy papayas next time I'm in town.  How about it?  drooling

LOL!  You've got a deal!  I would love to try it, but is it resilient or hardy enough to survive after shipping?  If so, I'll send you a PM w/my addy.
