We picked our first watermelon this evening...Charleston Gray and Crimson Sweet.

Also picked a few tomatillos...the seeds (Rio Grande Verde) were from Baker Creek...however, there are a few husks that look like Purple Coban on their web page. I need to read-up on a good salsa verde recipe.

I brought some ingredients to work today to hopefully make some salsa verde over lunch.

Landarch, your tomatillos have me drooling! I bought seeds, but did not get them in the ground. You've given me some motivation to make sure that happens next season!

Tomatillo seeds are tiny...I started them indoors with my tomatoes and peppers.

I've read that as a part of the Nightshade family (tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, etc.) that they can be planted deep to encourage rooting. You also have to have more than one plant to get pollination.

It's difficult to tell when these things are ready to pick...I think one should wait until the fruit is big enough to split the husk, however I'm seeing some fall to the ground without being big enough to do so.

That part about needing at least two plants I learned here (might have even been in a post fron you). That's pretty important to know!!
