Cantaloupe - should I yank them? Empty Cantaloupe - should I yank them?

Post  tiffanybrenner 7/23/2014, 6:29 pm

In one of my beds that I amended with my compost, apparently I didn't let the compost heat up quite enough to kill everything. So I've had a (happy?) accident and what I believe are cantaloupe seedlings are popping up and happily growing. Being late July in San Diego (inland, zone 10) I'm wondering if I should just yank them and reclaim my space or experiment and see if they actually grow melons. I have plenty of other space, so I don't need it now. But just thought I'd get opinions on the likelihood of actually successfully producing melons this late in the season. I think that would put harvesting sometime in late Sept or Oct, right?

If you have the room, then experimenting is fun!

+1 Since you have you room, just enjoy it and see if you can get a late crop of cantaloupes!

San Diego is so hot, why not try it? I've picked ripe squash all the way up here in Oregon in late September, so surely you could do something similar in San Diego?

Maybe you could compromise and grow them vertically like sanderson does, freeing up a lot of your bed for growing other things? Looks like it's working great for her, really maximizing her space.
