bell peppers slow growing? Empty bell peppers slow growing?

Post  tiffanybrenner 7/23/2014, 6:09 pm

I purchased my bell pepper plants and planted in my SFG ~ 8 weeks ago. At that point they were all about 12" high and had a couple small peppers. Those peppers are rippening nicely, but I"m not really seeing many new blossoms and the plants have only grown a ~2-4".  And just aren't getting bushy. They are getting full sun, water regularly and appear happy enough. Are they just really slow growing or do I need to explore more fertilizing?

Tiffany,  There are so many variables to consider before adding any fertilizer in SFG.  Can you post pics?  Including a broader photo showing their location?

Feed them with some tomato tone. Add a lot of quality compost to your boxes when the season is over.

I went to a gardening "class" and the guy said to cut off the top of the pepper plant when it was small. I did, and we have lots of peppers! They're huge too! One was about the size of a softball!!

I don't know how hot it is there now, but over here, it can get so hot that the flowers just drop off and we get little fruit during the hottest part of the summer. Could that be a factor for you lately?

Same issue here (except for the jalapeno) and I usually have great peppers.  Our weather has been very inconsistent; HHH for a few days (hazy, hot and humid) and then days in the 70s/low 80s with cool nights.  I suspect that is my issue since they look healthy and are. albeit very slowly, producing.

We seem to be having a rough pepper season here in PA - things are moving along, but very slowly.  Each of my plants has one pepper on it, but recently things seem to be picking up a bit.  Hopefully there will be enough time in the season for the new ones to grow.

Yup, I'm having very slow growth on all my summer veggies due to cool weather.  I thought for sure August would warm up but it hasn't yet.  So I planted my fall seeds.

If I didn't have pepper plants this year, I would have thrown in my trowel. I wish my tomatoes had turned out even a tenth as well.

While slow, my tomatoes are looking good! My 'sugar Lump' cherry is about ready to topple over it is so loaded; I picked 56 from it last night.
