Can any old pea be used as a soup pea?
Just wondering...because I think I've let my shell peas get too starchy and now I'm thinking maybe I should just let them dry and use them for soup.
The variety I've got is 'Thomas Laxton'.
I know there are varieties specifically for drying into soup-peas and I also know that this is not one of them.
What I'm wondering if anyone's ever tried to dry peas that were meant for shelling and if so were they good in soup?
Thanks in advance!

That was quick!
I'm guessing this has happened to you before, Camp? Any tips on drying? I've grown dry beans before but the pea vines aren't as easy to just cut and hang upside down, and it looks like some pods are turning yellow whereas some others might still be edible as shell peas.

I would just throw them in soup now, after shelling... you could also make mushy peas. I love mushy peas......... How many pounds of peas do
you have?
you have?

Rose: Yes, I was planning on saving some but I'd rather try to salvage the rest as soup peas if possible.
Camp: I have no idea how many pounds I have. I guess I'll find out tomorrow if it doesn't rain too much tonight. DH & I are planning on cutting all the vines down tomorrow, laying them on a tarp, and then go about sorting into separate piles the pods that have gone by for soup and the ones that are still tender for shelling...what are "mushy peas" btw? Like mashed potatoes only made from peas?

A friend of mine gave me a recipe for fresh pea soup, and it does not specify what kind of pea, so I think you should be able to use them just fine, either dried and reconstituted (like split pea soup) or as a less sweet fresh pea for soup. A good broth with give them extra flavor anyway.
