Anyone grow okra? - Page 3 Empty Re: Anyone grow okra?

I will be planting 6 squares this summer. I noticed towards the end of fall that there were new stems, flowers and okra growing where the lower stems fell off as it grew taller. If I topped it a couple months before winter, will that force the side fruits to develop before first frost?

okra are a hot weather plant and thrive in the summer heat when most every thing else burn up.  we plant 1 per ft and 40 will provide all we need for freezing and canning and we eat alot of okra.  They will grow and bare till the first frost.  We usually get all we need and pull them up shake them off and till any excess roots back into the bed they just add to the compost of our soil.By leaving 2 lower branches that happen to point the way you want them to and trimming other branches away you will get 3 main stalks on one root system and make plenty.  trim all other branches below the last fruit they will grow tall and strong and bare all the more.

Thanks Cappy, The lower leaf branches fell off as the plants grew. Are you saying to choose 2 of the new buds at the nodes and keep picking off the others?

Here is a small growing okra plant in our garden.
Anyone grow okra? - Page 3 P1010012
You can see here that we left 1 leaf at the bottom of the plant growing out towards the outside of the box and trimmed off any other leaves growing below the okra pods.  This leaf will grow to be a whole other okra bearing stalk on the same root system.

They will get over 8 feet tall and turn into a jungle if you let them.

Anyone grow okra? - Page 3 Empty Re: Anyone grow okra?

Post  trolleydriver 5/8/2017, 12:57 pm

I decided I would like to try growing Okra. This is probably a crazy idea given where I live. I know Okra likes heat which we usually get in July to mid August. So this is another Trolleydriver experiment.

I've started some seeds indoors to get a head start. I was going to put one plant in one square in my SFG.  But I'm wondering if I should try growing a couple inside a mini greenhouse to give them lots of heat.

I just noticed that the leaves on on one of the Okra seedlings (the largest one) are covered in what looks like small clear eggs. I checked online and found out that these are not eggs but natural secretions from the plant and actually show that the plant is healthy.

The following article is written by someone who lives northwest of Toronto in Ontario. She mentions Vineland Research Station. Interestingly I worked as a summer student at that same research station when I was in high school, many years ago.

https://www.thestar.com/life/2014/07/26/growing_okra_an_exciting_challenge_for_gardeners.html

Here are my Okra seedlings (spotty germination).

Anyone grow okra? - Page 3 Empty Re: Anyone grow okra?

Post  BeetlesPerSqFt 5/8/2017, 1:46 pm

I'm in US zone 6a, and I'm growing okra. The past two years I grew the 'standard' Clemson Spineless #80. I haven't done very well either year, but I've gotten a few tasty pods. If I keep trying I'll get it figured out. This year I'm trying the variety "Burmese", and I'm adding additional plants in a sub-irrigated planter on my front porch, because that seemed to work very well for the peppers last year.

I soaked my seeds overnight, and I think I drained them but left them wrapped in a damp paper towel for another day because things got too busy...?not sure... notes are a little vague, as they tend to get when things get too busy. I do recall they had practically all germinated before I got them sown! They are indoors in TP-tubes. They are a little further along than yours, and have their first true leaves. I'm concerned that they are tangling their roots up in the bottom of the drip tray, but I'm out of room inside - can't repot them into something larger, too cold to put anything more outside yet (freeze watch tonight affraid .)  I'll just have to see what happens.  Smile

TD, You have nothing to lose by this experiment, and okra to gain. Very Happy Stick a couple in the dirt area and compare.

The further south ya are the better it grows and way down here it is one of the few things that can stand out summer heat.  It grows to over 6 ft and produces till a frost kills it some times all winter long.

I grew okra in the greenhouse a couple years.  I think I got 1 pod each year.  I did  little research and found what Cappy says, okra is in its glory when it is too hot for anything else to produce.  It wants it hotter than tomatoes can handle to set fruit.  I prefer tomatoes to okra but every year my DH asks me to try again though.  Maybe if I put a little greenhouse in the greenhouse just for the okra? But what about pollination then?

I second Cappy one per square, last year mine would grow taller than I could reach so I would top it and then it would branch out and regrow and keep on producing, Yesterday I harvested my first small batch mixed it with some I had frozen from last year and deep fried it with cornmeal, Makes it all worthwhile.

I planted 2 seeds each in 6 spots in the amended dirt strip. So far, only 5 have spouted. That's okay as each year I never end up cooking any . . .

rofl rofl Me too.  This year I am going to try to plant a lot so maybe I will get enough to cook.  Aphids and ants get to it every year.  This year I am going to try Tanglefoot painted around the base of each stalk.  Last year a friend of my daughter gave us a large grocery bag full of okra.  We breaded it and baked it and it was delicious.  I do not like fried okra.

If ya cant tell from all the stuff on or blog we plant as many as 40 plants 1 to the foot.  They bare like crazy through the summer and whAT WE DO IS PICK THEM EVERY OTHER DAY.  wash and then slice and stick in a bag in or freezer when the bag is full we then cook them down and either freeze or can them.  It's what we do with stuff that bare over time.  Just came from out working in the yard and noticed it will soon be time to start picking figs and saving them up till they are enough to can.

I should be able to "bake" a few Okra plants in my mini-greenhouse. If the plants produce pods I can just leave the door shut on the greenhouse and let them bake right on the plant.

betta set er on hi then it gets in the upper 90's F here with the humidity a steamy 90% or so and they love it.  Only thing I can grow in summer heat is okra, peppers, and yard long beans.

Three of my okra did poorly. One has promise. And this one seems to be doing well. Not sure what the difference is.

I have grown them.  Such pretty flowers.Do pick them when they are 3-4" long.  By the time I would bring back the harvest bowl, they were 6" and too mature! Razz  Anyone grow okra? - Page 3 Okra_f10

Anyone grow okra? - Page 3 Empty Okra overwinter ?

Post  markqz 11/18/2021, 5:54 pm

It doesn't freeze here, so I'm wondering it it's worth it to try letting one or two over-winter. The advantage would be the head start in Spring, when lack of light slows baby plants. Anyone know if they'll actually survive to season 2 ?

This is a planting I did one year.  Had so much Okra I was giving it away to anyone who would take it.  Don't know if it would produce in a second year.  Freezes here in the winter.

I don't know how tall they got, but it was real tall.  had to use a step ladder and then bend the stalk down in order to harvest.

Mark, You are far enough south to make the experiment worthwhile. You may have to prune it and be prepared for it to spread out. Keep us posted.
