My Garden: New and Improved Empty My Garden: New and Improved

Post  camprn 6/25/2014, 6:54 pm

I Finally removed and replaced the last 4x6 bed that was choked with tree roots. Things are coming along nicely, though I wish I had finished that project a few weeks ago. It's finally getting hot which means the tomato, pepper and aubergine plants will start growing quickly now.

Stupid tree roots that killed my garden.

The garlic is still going strong and the summer greens are coming along and being harvested every few days.

I think I am going to transplant out a few of the brussels sprouts, They are already huge and I want more room for the peppers that are in front of the BS. Beets, carrots and beans doing well.

Thanks. The florida weave works great. This trellis is 7 feet tall and the tomatoes go all the way to the top in a straight vertical. This system makes it so easy to manage the plants.

Looks real good and healthy.  What variety of peas are you growing and how tall do they get.  My spring peas are all finished and removed from the beds but I am going to do a fall planting and I am trying to decide what variety to plant.

I grow the sugarannes, and they typically max out just above 3 feet, 4 feet at the most. I wonder if they would grow taller if I didn't sow them so thickly.

I have wondered the same thing about the height of the various beans I am planting.  Last year my dragon tongue beans grew to a height of 5 feet.  This year they have stalled at 3 feet.  The major difference between the two years is this year I planted them in a 2 x 2 and intensively spaced them.  Is the height a result of the spacing or some other environmental factors.  ??????????  I think I will experiment next year and see if I can eliminate some of the other variables.

Yolos.....what is that in your profile pic??  looks amazing!  Our dragon's tongue beans only grow about 18" tall, and that's what the packet says?? I've never seen climbing ones? I'd love to get some seeds tho! Check you packet and see what you have Smile We strip our beans once a week, and get about a grocery store bag full of beans each time. They really really produce, and NO strings!!  love 'em!!

I've googled things, too, and seen our photos. It's so weird, isn't it?

Camp, your garden looks great! Well done! That was a lot of work. I'm just trying to replace old cupboard boxes and not looking forward to it, let alone have to raise them.

Can't use Florida weave here. The high winds blow the plants one way and then turns back and blows them the other way.  They just slide around too much.

Camp, Is that potential video of trellis weaving still on the back burner? I would love to see it. Someday.

Camp - is the box with the tomatoes strictly all tomatoes or do you plant anything in the middle between the plants? ... I think I would like to give this a try next year - need to make sure I do it right!

A few of the tomato plant root balls are near the middle of the box so there is a little room to put a few things. Today I transplanted a few basil and 1 calendula into the middle.

CC how do you trellis or stake your indeterminate tomatoes now?

I mostly use Mels trellis which holds up in anything nature can toss at us.
My Garden: New and Improved 3868
But this year I put the overflow plants into the old school SFG and elsewhere and am using large tomato cages and bamboo stakes. They'll go down with the wind, unless I tie them to the rhodie bush behind them which was the original plan. Others I've left to sprawl. It's an experiment.[/quote]

Excellent explanation! and your video came out great, Camp. I didn't know about weaving one of the side branches so as to stabilized the plant against the wind. Thank you so much!

Now how about a video of the first trellis you wove earlier that isn't for tomatoes, the one you said that you saw it done and taught yourself how to do it?
