I need identification of these three plants growing in my garden. I am in Northern Virginia and I think it is zone 7 but not sure. The plants grow by themselves and seems to be pest/weed but I wanted to know what they are before deciding if I am going to be plucking them out. Thank you.

Sorry I could not figure out how to post the pictures but they are now posted. Hope a few people can chip in and help me to identify these plants and if they have any good use or if they are weeds. Thanks.

If this plant doesn't smell like mint or basil it's a weed.

Not sure about the first two, but the last photo looks like Virginia Creeper to me. Its a vine that we have growing around the office. It's hard to get it pulled up.

OK so it is Virginia Creeper. I will Google etc it but should it be pulled? As you say it is not easy to remove it as it stitches itself to the ground and is very long and seems to have very sturdy root system. It is next to a grape vine I planted a few years ago and I wonder if it can hurt the grape.

Weed amongst tomato plants.

We have something very much like that here in the UK it has a long tap root and is a nuisance once it becomes established , as every time you pull it up the tap root regrows the plant .

I searched for Virginia Creeper and it is a good plant to have it grow on the house as it shades the house and helps to keep the interior cool during summer it grows up the walls quite steardily, may also insulate in winter although I did not read anything to that effect. If I could I would have liked to move this plant next to the house and let it grow up the wall. Does anyone thinks this is feasible? The other 2 plants I post pictures of have not been identified by name only that they are likely weeds, well I kind of guessed at that myself but the purpose of this post was to identify them by name so if anyone knows their name please chip in. The plant that looks like basil I smelled and taste it and it tastes awful and does not smell like basil. Ironically it has come out (actually 2 of them) at the very spot where last year I had planted some basil and the basil had flowered so I suspected them to be basil although it did not quite look like one hence why I tried to taste it. The other one I thought might be cilantro but although it looks similar but again it is not.

Be sure to research it & make sure it doesn't attack your house like English Ivy.  It literally ate cement/stucco/etc on my parent's house.

Regarding your first plant.  It might be a wild carrot.

Here's a link to a website about poisonous wild plants.
http://lcorbin.com/2013/06/poisonous-plans/  When you get to the website home page, you need to type in "wild carrots"  then click the "poisonous plants" link under "recent posts" on the right for.

Not sure why I can't link directly to the actual page, but about a quarter of the way down, it has a set of criteria for distinguishing between "wild carrot", "poison hemlock" and "water hemlock".

Good gardening,

Thanks for the link to the poisonous plants blog.  I grew up 20 miles away from the Eno River and spent time along its banks.

As a side note, the Eno River Park in Durham, NC, is the site where Roy Underhill of The Woodwright's Shop built the post and beam shop building whose interior has been recreated on a soundstage at WUNC-TV, the PBS affiliate in Chapel Hill, NC.

If you are in the area, watch for notice of the Eno River Park Festival coming up, next month (if they still hold the old schedule from 25-30 years ago).  It is a great festival.  I recommend it.

Darn why are all these things poison? I chew a bit of one of them (I think the one that looked like basil) and for days I did not feel good about it. That one still have not been identified by the way. So far one is Virginia Creeper (poison fruits when it fruits) and possible nasty rash when touched, the other one hemlock which is also poison, what they execute ancient philosopher Socrates with, good job I did not taste that one.

I believe that the first pic is of wild carrot, not hemlock; but take no chances.  Notice the leaf and stem structure on the this drawing of the the hemlocks . . .

I need identification of these three plants growing in my garden. Hemloc10

. . .   and compare your pic in that image with this image of wild carrot . . .

I need identification of these three plants growing in my garden. Wild_c10.
Note the additional fringing of the edges of leaves in the wild carrot vs the hemlock.
