Preventative measures for moles/voles
I am setting up my garden now (have plants VERY ready in the house that I grew from seed). We're on a tight budget right now so am trying to find the most economical way of doing things - and some things will just have to wait. Unfortunately that includes using Perlite in some of my boxes.
Anyway, I haven't gardened at this house before but I think there might be moles and/or voles in the yard. I do know that in another part of the yard, not close to the garden, are gophers. Instead of digging up the grass under my boxes I'm putting down cardboard (to kill the grass) and weed cloth. Will this be enough to keep the critters from coming up and eating my root crops?

Re: Preventative measures for moles/voles
I'd suggest adding some hardware cloth (wire mesh) to the bottom of your boxes. My parents garden in East Texas and have gophers EVERYWHERE so putting wire mesh under the boxes is the only way to keep them from tunneling under and up into your beds. Their sharp teeth make short work of cardboard and weed barrier.
Moles/Voles
That's bad news. My garden is costing too much as it is - may not even be able to get everything I need for Mel's Mix. If I thought I was discouraged before, I'm really discouraged now.
