6" depth ?

In the book, Mel says that the mix should be 6" deep.
But he also suggest building the box with 1 x 6 or 2 x 6 lumber.
As everyone know, 6" lumber is only 5.5" wide.

So is he saying that 5.5" of mix is sufficient?

Correct. Even potatoes and carrots will grow at that depth, but the harvests will be smaller.

Some folks will make their boxes deeper so they can add mulch easily.

I recall that somewhere he mentioned making even smaller boxes out of 2x4s so they would be portable.

Two levels of 2 x 4's makes it 7". 6" for Mel's Mix, and 1" for mulch. ??

I believe it was one level, 2x2, so he could pick it up and carry it into kids' classrooms.
