I am hoping my garden boxes are built by this weekend, and want to get my soil mix stuff ready to put in the second they are in my garden area. I am in East Vancouver Wa, I have 4 4x4's 12 inches deep being built. Where should I buy my soil ingredients that will hopefully leave money for some veggie starts to put in it as I cooked most of my seedlings leaving them outside with the cover still on pale

Do you have a local grange or farm coop of any kind? They often sell in larger quantities, which can make things cheaper, or sell brands or grades/qualities you might not find find at other stores around town.

Don't forget to check the Vermiculite database on the Forum. Most of the places that sell Vermiculite will also sell the other ingredients needed for Mel's Mix, IMHO.

Sun lover, Welcome to the Forum!  glad you\'re here

I noticed you stated that the beds are 12" deep. Are you planning to fill all 12" with Mel's mix? I ask because that will cost twice the amount that filling them to the SFG usual depth of 6."

Hi Sun lover.  Welcome!

You might check some of your local small farmers for compost.  Just make sure they use organic methods for feeding their animals.

Just a point of fact, Organic does not mean non toxic.

Check craigslist or freecycle for sources of compost or composted manure. Welcome to the SFG Club!!!

  • Number one destination must be Concentrates, Inc. in Milwaukie, OR.  It's a bit of a drive but it's all on the highway and easy to turn into a day trip, stopping at Bob's Red Mill and Dave's Killer bread while you're out there.  They have the big bags of coarse vermiculite at the best prices. You'll also be able to pick up several different kinds of compost while you're there.
  • Nearby you've got Yard n' Garden Land on the corner of Hwy 99 and 99th St.  I've purchased OMRI certified peat moss from them.
  • There's also Shorty's, whose location Ridgefield may be closer to you, for more sources of peat and different composts.
  • Walmart always has composts, as well as Big Lots and Fred Meyers.
