Second Season SFGardner
Hi all,
I'm from East Tennessee. This is my 2nd season using this method. My honey and I liked it so much last year, this year I added on to our wonderful little garden. We now have six 4X4 boxes. I will post some pics of last years harvest and also our new additions. I took the project a step farther and built a few elevated boxes. These are great for the elderly. Just so happens this past weekend I setup one at a nursing home. They love it!
Reading through this site I think most share my interest. I decided to join after quite sometime. I'm eager to learn more and who knows maybe share a tip that may help someone.

Hi Pappy
I'm new to this site too and have already gotten some much needed help with my two new 4x4 beds....
What a great idea to set up a garden at the nursing home!
Gardening for all ages! Last weekend I had about ten neighborhood kids (in addition to my own) - all pretty young - helping me to dig out my old garden and set up my new one. It was joy for all!

What have they decided grow?
Thank you. I don't know. They have a therapy group that will decide. I gave a few suggestions. They are excited to get started and it does my ole heart good to see this kind of response.

Sweet! I keep thinking about TT's at the Memory Care Facility where my Mother lived. I haven't been back but they have areas that would be great. I will have to go back and see if it's a reality. It's only a mile or so from my house. Problem is, anything growing will have to be totally edible, flower, fruit, stems, leaves and roots! Dementia is a terrible thing, but the past is often well ingrained with multiple routes to the same memory.
Enough of this, back to Pappy and Georgia.

Re: Second Season SFGardner
Welcome Pappy Slip, and what a great idea! Older people take a lot of comfort from gardening, and it's great to get them outdoors if you can.
sanderson, I never thought that a garden in a nursing home had to have only completely edible plants. Wouldn't something like tomatoes be fine so long as the elderly tenants were being supervised? Otherwise I guess you'd have to go for things like spinach and cole crops.

Hi Pappy. Welcome! Glad you've joined us. I'm a bit north of Atlanta, so we're not too far from each other... Only a couple of hours or so.
Can't wait to hear more about what the seniors decide to do with their garden!

Howdy, Pappy Slip!
Glad you found us and decided to join in. Looks like you are well ahead in the game of SFG. I've built 2 4x4s a 4x10 and a 2x7 table tops this year. I've only got the 2x7 planted. I have to make the MM for the other 3 and haven't found my roundtuit.
You didn't say what part of East Tennessee you're in. I've got a brother in Johnson City. He has spent the last 60 years in East Tennessee from Chattanooga to JC, even married a girl from Cleveland. I spent the first half-century in NC and vacationed every year in the Smokies. (Moved to Texas about 20 years ago.) That's a beautiful part of the world you live in.
Welcome. And, don't be a stranger.

Welcome to the forum. Maybe now we can get some of your good ideas since you decided to join us.
Great idea making a tabletop for the nursing home. I'm sure they'll have a ball with it.
