Love the guard gnome. My dogs are learning to respect the boxed areas. I still put a gate up when I'm not in there, no guard gnome.

Re: My 1st container garden 2014
Hey, I put garden statuary in my gardens just because I love them, mostly fairies since I'm fairy-happy. I also put a toad house (clay pot turned on its side) in the flower bed. While checking the latest toms I put in the flower garden yesterday, I noticed a beautiful garter snake slithering out of sight. I'm blessed.
So far I only have one determinate tomato in a pot plus some herbs. We're having a strange gray, cloudy day and the ground is still wet from yesterday. It hit 77 at ten this morning then dropped to 66 at noon. Its bouncing all over the place today.
Happy Memorial Day friends.

Looks like he should do the job, Drpepperz!
Sanderson - I like your owl.
I'm about to go get some more plastic snakes from the dollar store. I think I need more in the blueberries and need to add some to the garden.

Mega update!! May 29th 2014
Well it finally warmed up in Quebec!! Things started to grow
I've started making compost tea once a week and use it on everything that grows in my yard, even a ^patch of grass that had gone thin because of a branch pile
here are the results!
This is my best potato bin! it grows about twice as fast as the others...maybe because it's semi-transparent??? idk...the plants are already about8 to 14" tall, i added about 4" of soil in that one already!
my onions are also getting big, a good thing since they were my terrier's 1st victims!
Cucs (1st row) and tomatoes
Peas
a bad pic of my beets
Garlic
we rrecycled an old toy wheelbarrow into a planter
That's it for now, I think it looks good
Cheers!

I like the wheelbarrow. Usually I'm not a fan of cute stuff like that, but for some reason, in the garden, it usually works for me.

Funny what a little sun will do, eh? Heheh!
On the other hand, scary what it will do too! It's becoming the time when I have to watch seedlings and transplants like a hawk so they don't die in a day or two under the summer sun.

I find i (accidently) picked the perfect location...the garden gets shade form the surrounding trees when the sun is at it's hottest in early afternoon

Re: My 1st container garden 2014
Very nice! I've tried scoping out locations like that -- both morning and afternoon sun, but not the worst of the latter -- around here, but haven't found it yet. Almost everything finds the summer sun too harsh here, especially paired with the occasional drying winds and the reliable zero rainfall all summer. Great that you found such a perfect spot!

Re: My 1st container garden 2014
I've installed my trellis and my 1st tomato stand today
I've installed them on hinges, so if i need to change the angle all i need to do is put a shorter or longer set of poles in the back
ANd this is my giant tomatoe rack! I think i might add a length of rope under de middle part...I'll see
Those are all priduct of my overflowing brain so if you see any flaws, please feel free to poitn them out, I am on this site to learn!
I need a second tomato rack, if you like it so much that you would like to see how I build it let me know i'll put a "play by play" when i build the next one

I'm not sure I understand how you're using that angled trellis with its smallish wire grid. What is it that you want it to do?

Re: My 1st container garden 2014
The 1/4 gris is just what I had laying around, and figured i'd put it at an angle for 2 reasons...
1.Since the grid is so small, it,ll be harder for the peas and beans to grab a hold so i get gravity to help me
2.The kids are bif part of why i make this garden, that way it'll be easier for them to steal some sweet peas

What a great way to get kids to eat more veggies!!

Ah! Another happy gardener. It's looking fine in your neck of the woods.
