Seed coats sticking to leaves, stalling growth
Is it significant or preventable when a seed coat holds tight to leaves while the stem keeps getting bigger and bigger? Some seedlings croak because I pulled the leaves right off trying to help...
yet some seed coats can be pulled off successfully. Does this issue indicate weak seedlings, is it preventable or just part of the overall seed starting experience-- anyone??

I tend to think it is a lack of humidity softening the seed coat. So I put a drop of water on it and try not to pick at it. I always thought it was because I have an arid climate. Hopefully someone can be more illuminating.

This happened to me, mostly when I plant tomato seeds. I just pulled some starter leaves off the poor little thing this morning.

I'd like to know why as well, LLM and Turin.
During the winter I do a lot a sunflower seed sprouting for my fresh winter greens, and some seeds stick like glue to the first leaves and do not come off when it is time to harvest so have to pick them out after I have sheared them off. Some sprouts you can eat the seed coverings but sunflower seed coverings are hard.

Yep, I've murdered quite a few plants trying to get that cap off. Peppers are bad about it too.

I've always left mine on. They must come off eventually since I don't see them on there later.

Kay, that's a great answer. How about, The way things are, is the way things are.... I think that's what the little mice said in that movie about the little pig called Babe.

I like to pop off that seed if I can. When its gone the first leaves seem to spread out in relief and start to grow. Sometimes I pop the whole top off and lose the seedlings, darn it.
