Luna Moth in Middle South? Empty Luna Moth in Middle South?

Post  Windmere 4/2/2014, 10:34 am

Hello Middle Southerners and all those also interested,

This morning we found this Luna Moth on our door step.  It's nose (?) was right up against our door jam.  My daughter did some research and she found that it mainly eats tree vegetation.

Well, I'd like to know from folks if it might eat my veggies.  I would assume that since it was dead that it had taken steps to procreate (not sure if it's a male or female).

Since we are new the south (relatively... 8 yrs), we've never seen one of these.

Luna Moth in Middle South? Empty Thanks

Camprn, I completely forgot about bug guide as a resource!  Yes, we think it is magnificent too.  We are showing it to all our neighbors and I'm e-mailing the photo to various relatives.  How fun it was to find it!

My daughter got a little entomology lesson today (along with the rest of her home school studies).  She was quite sad to find out that they only live for about a week.

Ah but that is not true. Actias luna lives in various forms for a few months.

I remember my dad gently calling me to our back door one afternoon.  I think I was about 8 or 9.  There was a Luna Moth holding onto the screen.  It was beautiful.  The next morning, it was gone.  That's the only one I've ever seen in person....

That is a beautiful memory.  I have a feeling my daughter will also remember today in a positive way.
