Hi, I'm so glad I found Mel's SFG book and this site. I have most of the materials and am really excited to start my own SFG!
I haven't had much success with gardening in the past, so am hoping to do much better now.  Very Happy

Terraverde,  Welcome to the Forum!   glad you\'re here

As a relative Newbie myself, I have to say that SFG is wonderful.  Let us know what ingredients you have so far.  I say that, because the hardest part of getting started with SFG is finding the right ingredients.  We are here to help you get off to the best start possible.

I speak from experience!   Embarassed Embarassed   I didn't quite understand what 5 different sources of compost meant.  I had to spend the rest of the season playing catch-up!

PS, as to your question on up-potting. You don't have to worry about the transplant's potting mix if you put it i MM. If the roots are too thick, you can usually trim off the bottom of the roots. Near the end of Chapter 6, ANSFG, 'How to Plant Your ANSFG', there is a paragraph on "Trim the Roots, plus a couple pages later, an excellent photo of a root bound plant.

Hello from central Texas! Empty Thanks for the welcome

And thank you Sanderson for your advice. I have the weed cover for underneath the frame.  I have the wood pieces for the basic 4x4 frame and also for a 2x4 frame. I also have the Peat moss and compost: mushroom, cow manure, earthworm casings and a bag of Mel's Mix SFG compost. I just found the Mel's Mix today but will mix that with some of the other stuff. I bought two 8 quart bags of Vermiculite and so have to get more of that. I haven't been able to find the wood lath pieces for the top of the frame but my husband has ideas for that. There were two men at Lowe's who didn't know what wood lath was! Have had to go to four different stores to find it all, but feel like I'm almost there!
Thanks again for your help.

I have another recommendation.  Stay active on the Forum.  There are so many topics, helpful hints, willing folks, DYI projects.  In one year you will feel like an experienced gardener, and a SFG gardener at that.  You will find yourself getting bolder and trying plants you never thought you could grow.

PS: I wanted to add that if you use ready made MM, you don't want to add any peat moss or vermiculite to it. Maybe a little composted manure. Set aside.

The other composts go on another tarp, mix and measure the volume. Then add the same volume of vermiculite and the same volume of fluffed peat moss to the tarp. Then, and only then, add the prepackaged MM to the tarp and mix thoroughly. I just don't want you to throw the mix off using the MM as a volume of compost. Does this make sense? Let me know if I didn't explain it right.
