I want to brew some compost tea this weekend. I will be using a 5 gallon bucket and 1 or 2 aquarium pumps. I will also be using ordinary tap water from our faucet.
I want to set the water aside so that the chlorine will evaporate before brewing my tea. My question is: How long do I let it sit to make sure that all the chlorine is out of the water before I begin brewing?

This will be my first batch of tea and I want to use it this weekend to put on some seedlings and a few other plants I will be putting in the ground.

Why are you doing this?  Is something wrong with your Mels Mix?

SirGringo, If you are using pumps for aeration, it should dissipate quickly.

I've been reconsidering the use of tea for outdoor plants. I talked with someone regarding making tea and they asked why would I use tea and not just the product (compost, worm castings).  idk  They said the product (compost, castings) is slow releasing with watering; while the tea is liquid and will just wash on through.

Using this person's reasoning, the seedlings won't have an extensive root system to take advantage of nutrients washing by.

On this Forum, I asked if anyone had "fertilized" their lawns with tea. I think the reply was that spreading the compost directly was better/ or should be okay. Something like that. So, if your compost is good, teas shouldn't be necessary. ???? Just my 2 cents.

Sanderson,
I have always felt the exact same way about compost tea. Why not just put the compost around the plant? The layer of compost around the plant will also help to maintain moisture in the soil. I personally don't see any way in which just putting down the compost isn't better than the tea.

On the one hand, some places that I've read say 24 hours.
On the other hand, some places that I've read say don't worry about it; it's not a problem.

Putting your air stones in the bucket and running the pump with chlorinated water in the bucket will dissipate the chlorine faster.  I do not make compost tea but I try to de-chlorinate my tap water before I dump it in the compost pile.  I run two air stones on 1 pump for 24 hours in a 18 gallon tub.  I have no idea if that is the right amount of time.  Anyone who ever had an aquarium should know the answer to your question as it is the same principle as putting fish in de-chlorinated water.

Another idea, if you want to instantly dechlorinate  tap water, call the pet store and see if they still sell dechlorinator drops for fish tanks. It was a common product years ago when I had tanks.

It never occurred to me to not use tap water on my compost pile.   Shocked

I leave my 5 gal buckets of tap water out for 24 hours before watering my SFG.

The aquarium water had dechlorinating drops, or we left it overnight before adding fish.

I do not know if the de-chlorination of tap water is necessary for a compost pile.  But in theory it makes sense.  I usually just keep a big rubbermaid tub next to the compost pile.  Let it collect rain and if needed, add tap water and let it sit for a bit. Stir it around every now and then and that will get rid of the chlorine. The only time I bother with the air pumps is when I am building a new pile and need lots of water at one time.

yolos , do you have a photo of your compost pile? I'm a nut for compost piles!  I know, kinky right?
 Embarassed
actually, I was just hoping to see the size of the bucket in comparison to the compost pile.

Anyone know about chloramine disinfection of town and city water supplies?
A lot of cities have gone to this alternative to chlorine purification of water supplies, like ours.

It is a combination of chlorine and ammonia and lasts longer in the water supplies. On the surface it sounds like it will release nitrogen eventually (a good thing) but I wonder about the microbes in our composts.  How much effect will hose water have on the compost?

To remove chloramines, you will need a chemical which is capable of converting it.  Check into products such as ChlorAm-X or other aquarium grade chlorine/chloramine products...it must state on the label that it will remove Chloramines!

This is what I use for my aquariums -- a 1 pound container will treat approximately 4,000 gallons.
