thanks mearburner. This Old House has seen some action over the last 50 60 years but never vibrating gutters like I'm hearing this time. I'll be safe, I just don't like being cold when the power goes out. One day I'll get a wood stove like every other New Englander.

The good news is they pronounced Chatham correctly on the ABC evening news. The best news is we didn't get any more snow in my neighborhood. The bad news, there's a wood pellet shortage and I'm down to my last 10 bags out of 5 tons. Evil or Very Mad

Well, then this weather just has to be over...needs to disappear like a bad dream.

Jim Cantore is still down at the Chatham fish pier.  There's nothing going on now but wind.  He should fly over to Nova Scotia.

Since I was bored today, between working from home, taking photos and keeping everyone updated on Facebook, I up potted the basil, started some ground cherry seeds & put those & some chard that isn't sprouting onto the heat mat.
Then for some unknown reason I started some spinach seeds.  They are not on the heat mat so I don't expect much.

Thankfully that latest storm, hurricane force winds I hear, missed us completely.  No rain, no snow, only overcast skies all day.  We had a limb come done across our private road, but it was easily pulled aside.
Saw the tracking and it went from Cape Cod then north and along Downeast Maine in the upper right side of the state.  Lots of snow up there tho.
Temps should reach the 40sF this weekend and next week so crossing my fingers that the snows will melt.

Nope,  I don't know, Jimmy.  The book I use to plant by for my area, The New Victory Garden, says to plant peas and spinach as soon as the soil can be worked.  I didn't hit any frozen MM a few inches down, so I was workin' it!
What a Face

I'm planting out my leafies this weekend, even if it's raining.  The 80 collards & kale plants are getting all tangled crowded & shading their neighbors out:   New England ~ March 2014 - Page 4 Photo128

Then I have to up pot those poor tomatoes but probably not the peppers yet.  I just gave them ALL a wee dash of Neptune to prep them.

Note of interest:   The tomato seeds in cellpacks that I put on the heat mat, no lighting, started germinating on the 4th and 5th days.  The ones under the lights, no heat mat, haven't done a thing.  This morning I put those on the heat mat to hurry them along.  I'm thinking warm-weather crops need more heat to germinate faster.

I'll be sowing my peppers today and sowing more Red Zebra and Stupice toms that were mixed up.  I love the flavor and look of Red Zebra so much, I want to be sure to definitely have a few to transplant this year.  I'll have to toss out the mixed up mess and try to keep my brain in order today while sowing. Very Happy

We in Maine, too, are expecting that rain and sleet mess.  Its been so nice, in the 40sF the last 2 days, that I was hoping the snows would melt quickly now.  I see the grass is greenish-brown over the septic tank at least.  I haven't seen our grass for months.

I started peppers seeds today.  I also sowed more Red Zebra and Stupice seeds but I just couldn't toss out the mixed up ones yet.  They are doing so well.

In other cellpacks, I missed some of them that were germinated and they were lanky before I noticed.  Those I up-potted to 16-oz Solo cups burying that lanky stem deep.  I hope to save them this way.
New England ~ March 2014 - Page 4 03-29-10
I slit the sides to make the cups air-pruners since I water from the bottom of the trays. Only time will tell whether these will be saved.

Tip:  Never hold your seedlings by their stems when transplanting.  If you must hold them, hold them by their leaves.  Holding the stem can crush parts of the circulatory system very easily.

Interesting tip about the stems/leafs quiltbea.

Rain rain rain here. Glad it will remove some of this snow so maybe I can get out there sooner, but wow, soggy. We do spend a lot of time fighting the weather up here, don't we?

I need to up-pot some seedlings (tomato, eggplant, pepper). Some haven't germinated yet (on heat mat), some were from my own pepper seeds so they may not. If they don't sprout in the next couple days I'll probably re-plant with another variety.

Haven't gotten my hands on celery seed yet, have to hurry on that. After hearing that celery was difficult to grow, last summer it went pretty smoothly.

Great duck weather.

I'm thinking of planting a few collards and kale outside today, too. It's warm enough here, low 50's, and should be drizzling later.  My thinking is that they can settle in during today and tomorrow while it's overcast, and then enjoy the sun come Tuesday.  I may have to cover tonight and tomorrow night due to possible, dare I say it, snow?

Right now it's pouring.  The winds are high, up to 30 mph, but that's normal for the Cape so my plants just have to get used to it.
