question about shells and gardening
I am a shell gatherer, and am though I live in a land locked place, I am currently by the ocean collecting shells, very small ones.
Thinking about placing them all in my garden, to remind me of the trip
I am sure that there are many coastal gardeners out there, does anyone else use shells in their garden to any extent, and do they eventually break down for the calcium?

I have shells all over my perennial gardens & SFGs, some by design and the rest thru the composted seaweed. I can't tell if they are disintegrating but it seems they must be as over years they break somewhat easily. And I'm guessing that the calcium probably comes off, albeit in small amounts.

In my neck of the woods the mussel shells go right in the compost pile. Takes about 3 years for them to break down.
43 years a gardener and going strong with SFG.

I guess I am just wondering if there might be a down side to this, that shells might be bad for the garden OR particularly good ?

I can't think of a single downside other than the time it takes for them to break down. But that's not a bother. I'm not sure if they get in the way of roots or not. I haven't noticed that they do.

You can actually have too much calcium in your soil. Nothing beats testing for finding out if you really need an additive before adding it.
