Hey everybody! This will be my first time to use a square foot garden. I am really looking forward to this! I live in the far southwest corner of Oklahoma. Very dry and hot summers. The method seems like a great way to do things. I hope to grow some tomato plants, carrots, squash, and egg plant. Does anyone have any tips for growing watermelon in a small place? It is my all time summer favorite!

Reddirtpharmer,  Welcome to the Forum!   glad you\'re here

Grow the little size watermelons and grow them vertically.  One square foot foot print but with lots of head room.  Type in Vertical in the Search box at the upper left and you will find lots of topics on growing vertically.

Here's a favorite pic.

Evenin' yolos!

Did the vines hold up as the melons grew?  Looks to me like the weight of the melon might cause the vine to tear.  Did you experience that problem?  If not, how did you tie the vines to prevent it?

Shortly after this picture was taken, downy mildew struck and wiped out most of my crop.  But I understand that the vine gets thicker and will support the watermelon.  I took extra precautions with the remaining melons and took an old T shirt and cut it up and used it as a sling for the biggest watermelon.  I did get two of the melons to edible size before the whole plant succumbed to the disease.  You can't see in this picture but I did have three pots full of watermelons growing up an eight foot long trellis.

A friend sent me this picture of himself at his Uncle's farm in Peru.  Picture is probably about 15-20 yrs old.  Hanging watermelons.

The photo shows that they don't need support if the stems are supported! Wow!
