first seedlings of the year
broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage seedlings...germinated in 48 hours. I'm doing four of each on 1-week intervals. I put a small space heater under a card table and cover with a clear plastic cover.
spinach and lettuce under grow lights...may need to pot-up and keep under lights for a while...maybe move them outside on nice days for some real sunshine.

Re: first seedlings of the year
Last Sat. I put up kale, spinach, Thai basil, eggplant and leeks. By last Tuesday the kale and spinach had already sprouted which really surprised me. As of this morning everything is sprouted but the eggplant. This weekend it's pepper time.

Looks really nice, lots of luck with them.
I tried spinach in pots, nothing ever came up.
This season I'll just plant outside in cold frame.

What kind of spinach are you folks planting? Did you start it last year inside?

Re: first seedlings of the year
I've got Bloomsdale spinach and Baker Creek's Monstrueux De Viroflay. The viroflay packet says to direct sow and does best in cool Spring or Fall. This year going to try both seasons.
To answer your question I haven't tried to start it indoors. I thought all spinach was generally thought of as direct sow.

spinach
I've always had great luck with spinach except for last fall...hardly anything came up and/or survived through this winter.
Last year planted Tyee and Bordeaux...this year I am trying Oriental Giant, Summer Perfection, Catalina, Monstrueux De Viroflay, and Merlo Nero.

Landarch, why did you try MD Viroflay? For me it was the description, 'big leaves up to 10 inches long." Talk about getting a bang for your buck!

Re: first seedlings of the year
Spinach is my favorite veggie, raw, cooked, salad, dinner anyway I can get it I will.
A simple recipe I found a long time ago
Bacon & onions sauteed in butter
boil & drain spinach
add all in a pot and thicken to suit yourself..
We use flour to thicken.
I sometimes eat the whole thing...whats left that is....

Re: first seedlings of the year
llama...I was interested in the size from the description...and I bought a packet of each type of spinach my local nursery carried last fall. I planned on seeding many empty squares for winter spinach...but the germination wasn't that great. I probably have some edible spinach still under the snow. It's supposed to melt this weekend so I'll find out.

Gotcha. I was wondering if you've tasted Viroflay. You know how a packet will sometimes say how wonderful something tastes. Well, Viroflay did not. Hope we are pleasantly surprised.

I love the taste and texture of Monstreux de Viroflay! Indeed, the size is incredible. As I wrote last summer, I planted two squares, nine seeds each, and couldn't keep up with the harvest!
Re: first seedlings of the year
Thank you! I hope it likes Ohio weather too.

MdF should like your weather. It did well in Southern California, as well as here in Central Oregon.

Re: first seedlings of the year
My spinach is called charger and it is supposed to be an upright leaf type and it's supposed to be very hardy. I know Mel says it doesn't transplant well but I wanted to try something in my new greenhouse with my kale and sno peas.
I have a question about leeks. After planting them in pint size containers I read in the book that you just sow them in a tray of vermiculite. Only about 8 have come up so far so I wonder if I planted them incorrectly. This is my first year with seeds as in the past I bought sets.
