Brushing top of plants with your hands ??? Empty Brushing top of plants with your hands ???

Post  jimmy cee 2/12/2014, 1:15 pm

I have been reading about this one.
A little inquisitive since when I started working in the plumbing field many years ago I was sent to a supply shop for a left handed pipe wrench, along with a bucket of steam...Just out of high school what did I know ???
The bucket of steam sounded a little strange, however a left handed pipe wrench ???
A young kid trying to do right ???
Professional steamfitters ha ha...
I truly believe there could be some merit to this procedure, just like to know who is doing it.

If ya really want to hear a good one...
Working as an apprentice pipe fitter in a building project I just learned how to thread pipe.
By the way I was 18 years of age.
My boss (plumber) told me he needed a piece of pipe 17-1/2 inches long, the piece I had was 17 inches.
He suggested in order to save material I go down to the street and roll this piece of pipe in the sand a while.
I did this for about 2 hours, finally the pipe did measure 17-1/2 inches..
Howd he do it ???
Obviously the pipe did not expand, he had a ruler that was old, the joints were worn.
He stretched the ruler a bit every time I came back with it...
Again  a kid just out of high school...

Haha your old boss is hilarious.

I read on here somewhere that you brush the tops of your seedlings with your hands or put a fan on them to prepare them for the wind and weather outside.  Its suppose to help strengthen them.  It makes sense to me, so I just lightly brush all my seedlings when I water them/ turn lights on and off.  All of my seedlings did great last year.

When I took a theater lighting class in college, the instructor told me one day that he told a particularly gullible student, "We're still getting some light on the backdrop here. Go run to the assistant crew leader and ask him for a spray can of Light Off." Half a minute later he hears the assistant crew leader burst into laughter, and then the student comes walking back red-faced.

I have heard of apprentices being asked to go to the stores and get some skyhooks. I know there were a couple of others things but I cannot remember them right now.

By the way
Just finished screening the peat moss, golly it has alot of stuff in it, supposed to be from Canada.
Also screened my compost  after it finally thawed out.
Vermiculite doesn't need to be screened.
Will be mixing and starting some seeds this weekend, I'm sure happy the weekend's here at last,
this retirement thing is tough during the week.

I'll have pictures in sequence from beginning to end...just gotta find some sky hooks to hang my grow lights..

You're blaming Canada now, eh!?
What's tough about being retired during the week?

Noooo certainly not blaming Canada.
I read today the finest peat moss is from the North, our southern states has peat moss thats not so good.

Retirement work to me is harder during the week and less stressful on weekends.

Sorry about the skyhooks, I just found some cheap on Craigslist, and the guy is going to deliver them.
Cant beat that with this weather, I just hope their not to heavy.
The fellow bring them is left handed and also has a left handed pipe wrench, he's bring it along in case we need it.

I've sent new guys to the parts house for muffler bearings and automatic piston return springs.    Rolling Eyes

I like to use fans on my seedlings.  It's one time when cheap (crappy) products work best.  The 6-8 inch plastic fans for $5.99 don't move enough  air to cool you off, but they're just right for young seedlings.

Well then Jimmy Cee, you are all set up them. Glad to hear it. Skyhooks are quite light actually, otherwise they would not stay up. You have a bargain there if it includes free delivery.

Landarch, that was one of the things I now remember, except we had striped paint. It got sent back if the striipes were the wrong way.

Sorry to pull you back to the actual subject of this thread folks.....
I start with brushing the edge of a piece of paper over my smallest of seedlings, ever so lightly.  Then when they have their first true leaves or are in their next size pot, I use my hands.  Every time I check the babies or water or turn on and off the lights, I do this.  It definitely strengthens the plant.  I noticed it after I started this procedure.  Their main stem thickens nicely.  By the time they go outdoors to harden off, they can take the outdoor wind in their stride and just have to get used to Ol' Sol.
It works!

Brushing top of plants with your hands ??? Empty Re: Brushing top of plants with your hands ???

Post  mschaef 2/16/2014, 12:25 pm

When reading the thread topic my first thought was geared towards plants that self pollinate (i.e. tomatoes, pepper). Where brushing the tops with your hand would be beneficial to help the plant to produce fruit. This is the concept of the topsy turvsy tomatoes containers. But after reading everyone's wonderful post, and no I don't have any comments to add about being sent to find things that are not real, I notice everyone was talking about when the plants are little to help them be stronger. So now my question in returns is: Are you wondering about brushing the tops of plants when they are little to help them be stronger or when they are older to help with pollination?

I tap the main stem of my tomatoes and peppers with my fingers each time I visit the garden.  I'm sure it helps with pollination since these two crops are self-pollinating.  I tap others in bloom, too.  It can't hurt.

I am a little more aggressive - I give a good thunk to the tomato branch with the blossoms on it (practice for flicking off grasshoppers and such).

Please accept my apologies   Embarassed ...I pirated my own thread...
Your comments are indeed welcomed, I am planting today or tomorrow and will need to tend to their needs.
So then it must be slight movement that helps strengthen them ?.
I will be starting them in a fully enclosed fixture, with a warm crock pot for humidity.
After they come up I'll remove the front cover and maybe run a tiny fan in the area.
