Horseradish. Cut & Come Again?

I would love to grow some horseradish and from what I have read it seems to be fairly easy. I am the only person in my house that would eat it but I would eat it more often if I could just walk outside and grab some. After the plant is established is it possible to dig back some MM cut some of the root and then bury the root back in the MM? Doing this in a container might be an easy way yo do it but is it possible or will that harm the plant and possibly kill it? I wouldn't be doing this every week so it would hopefully have time to recover and keep growing.

it is easy to propagate 3 inch long root cuttings son long as they have a couple of growth node on them .

To get some horse radish root you usually have to dig the whole plant up which can be as deep as two feet .

I don't think a 6" MM filled bed would be deep enough ... a 30 inch deep barrel might though .
Obviously I'm happy for anyone to correct my thinking if they have succeeded where others normally fail.

Several years ago in my mother earth garden I had a ridged row two feet high ,about 3 feet across and 10 feet long . It made harvesting the roots much easier than digging down into hard compacted ground but boy was it hard work getting the row made and keeping it as a ridged row.

I wouldn't waste SFG space on horseradish. Where I garden came with horseradish. It's not good dirt, and it is huge. It only gets one clump of leaves, but I thought about digging it up one year - Shocked

. I think I'd have to bring in a bulldozer!

I too have my horseradish and comfrey outside of my SFG.

I was not planning on putting it in my SFG. I removed my rosemary and planted in the beds in my front yard. There is no reason to take up space in the SFG for something that doesn't need it. I might even try to grow it in some sort of container so digging it up would be easier. I might try planting it in one of my front beds also. I am hoping it is something I can plant and then leave it year round. This would allow my to harvest some of the root whenever but I don't know if that will harm the plant. I guess there is only only one way to find out for sure.
