I found that same jar at Walmart. Bought two, one for pickles on the counter and one for kraut.

Or was it Target? I think Target. I'm trying to picture the sequence of stops we made. The thing that excited me was American made. I did not want a crock pot because of the glazes in other countries.

Sanderson,
It looks like you won one of those Mother Earth News magazine contests!

The house my folks moved to in Tenn had 4 cases of quart & pint ball jars in the cellar. Mom hasn't done any canning in long time so she gave them to me. Just needed to buy lids & rings. Even had a few 1/2 gal size but they were chipped on the sealing edge. A bummer but we found other use for them.

Whoopeeee ! After a miserable spring Summer has finally arrived ( well at least for the next week Laughing )

A few minutes ago I had a look in the glasshouse .. I am now the proud owner of around eight four inch long cucumbers plus many many more baby ones .

It looks like I will be doing some sweet Cucumber & Dill pickles in 3% white vinegar in a Weck jar tomorrow.
The pesky ( ? Laughing ) slugs ate the all the Dill none of the new replacement stuff is big enough as it's barely had time to germinate ..so I'll  have to go shopping to see if I can get some fresh dill ..failing that I'll be using fennel foliage instead .

Canning season has finally arrived , even the climbing french beans have obliged and come into flower which means in a fortnight or so I'll be putting up sweet pickled green & yellow wax beans as well.

@sanderson wrote:Today was a big shopping day, even though it was 106*F.  We had to order a clothes dryer, and lo and behold, there were Kmart, Target, 99 Cent and Walmart stores on our circuit.  So I was able to search for more canning goodies.  The big score was a Made in the USA wide mouth 1-gallon glass jar for $9.99 at Target.  Sauerkraut!! first serious canning session - Page 2 Cannin11

Also some more jars, pickling stuff and 2 little magnet sticks to get the lids out of the hot water.  Don't know if they are really strong enough, but I had to chase the lids around in the hot water when I made the salsa.  Binder clips and plant clips for the garden.  A very good day. first serious canning session - Page 2 Cannin12

PS  If you think you see a bag of M&Ms in the background, it's just an artifact from the lighting. Smile
The magnet sticks work perfectly; that is what they are designed to do.

Plantoid, I finally had to sow dill seeds a couple weeks ago, none of my usual self-sow made it over winter, and I could NOT find a transplant!  Mine is 2 inches up, I use it primarily for the green part.

Sanderson, there is also a mirage in my freezer of Breyers Vanilla Bean....waiting for the peaches I just bought...but, no, just a mirage....lol

Vanilla ice cream with sliced peaches. Now that is a real mirage!

Here is the final outcome from my canning experiment using the hot water bath method and the first time I have done any canning. The result was 4 jars of chutney with green tomatoes and apple, 4 jars of chutney with green tomatoes and sultanas, 4 jars of green tomato salsa and 3 jars of red tomato salsa.  That's it for canning for this year. I now have some ideas of what I need to grow next year that will contribute things for canning.
