Hello, first day from Missouri
Hello all,
I look forward to all the great ideas and stories from this forum. I have bought and gave away many square foot gardening books. I love the concept of square foot gardening, but due the layout of my home I could never really get anything going/growing. But now I have moved onto 7 south facing acres. So I hope this will change my growing experiences. I have very high hopes of growing great food. I think I attached a picture of my garden plans. (if the picture doesn't post, please tell me how to do it...)

Miller, Welcome to the Forum! You'll be able to post photos in a week. With 7 acres you should be able to find a wonderful spot for your boxes.
Re: Hello, first day from Missouri
Welcome, miller63366! Great forum here. So, is this your first day in Missouri or your first day away from Missouri? Getting your zone in your profile will help getting more useful responses. The Missouri/Texas has me confused which is pretty easy.

Welcome to the forum. Your first week as a member, you can't post links to external websites, but you can post pictures using the forum's host server. You can find 'how to' post a picture instructions here:

Re: Hello, first day from Missouri
Thank you all for all the warm welcomes. To meatburner, that was my first day in this forum, I currently live in Missouri but hoping to move to Texas (longer growing season).
I corrected the zone issue, thank you.

Welcome miller. We are from vastly different weather zones but the idea is the same. Great gardening with SFG. I hope you kept a book or 2 from the past so you can get going with yours soon.

Re: Hello, first day from Missouri
Boffer, thank you for the link, it worked great!!!
So here are my garden plans. In the upper right hand view there are 2 open areas. One is for the entrance (closest to you) the other is where I plan to put a park bench (to watch the plants grow).
I hope to use a underground drip irrigation system that uses rain water/pond water.
If anyone sees issues with this please let me know.

I don't see distances between boxes listed (or its too tiny for my old eyes) but make sure you have 3 feet between boxes so you can mow down the weeds that will spread unless you are going to lay down a thick, bark mulch to prevent weeds (preferably over sheets of cardboard). Believe me, the weeds will come if given half a chance.

Re: Hello, first day from Missouri
Hi Miller, Can you make your Font larger? So it is the same size as the others? It will help my older eyes a lot. Thanks
Re: Hello, first day from Missouri
Agree with the 3' between boxes. You will probably need to push a wheel barrow between the beds.
Looks great!
Looks great!
I have seen women looking at jewelry ads with a misty eye and one hand resting on the heart, and I only know what they're feeling because that's how I read the seed catalogs in January - Barbara Kingsolver - Animal, Vegetable, Miracle

Re: Hello, first day from Missouri
miller, is this plan for nine 4x4' boxes with ten outer boxes? That's a huge garden. Will you be doing the whole thing at once or in piecemeal over the years?

Re: Hello, first day from Missouri
Yes 9 4'x4' boxes, it will be piecemeal, but most likely all in the same season. The overall size will be 28' x 28'. i just need to figure out the watering method (routing). I looks like alot of work, but i have a few boxes already made. so there is hope... lol

Re: Hello, first day from Missouri
sanderson,
I’m still making the boxes, trying to use reclaimed wood. It’s a slow process due to the snow, and cold temps we are having. Also does anyone know where I can get a large amount of vermiculite that’s cheap…? Like 4 cubic ft around $20?

Re: Hello, first day from Missouri
Try a big box home improvement center in the insulation dept. I got my 3 cu ft bags for $14.99 ea. a few years ago. Also check out our vermiculite database on the home page.
