Forecast for Christmas week in Central California is 60's in the days and 33-39* in the nights.  But for all of you in the path of the freezing rain (TX to NE), drive carefully and stay safe, warm and dry.  I simply cannot imagine living under those conditions.  Much less gardening!

I took advantage of the warm weather this afternoon. At 50*F I checked in on my bees. Cleaned out the entrances, swapped the homasote boards and put insulation and a plywood cover over both. Next check up will be in 4-6 weeks for these girls.

New England, December 2013 - Page 2 12-21-10

I was also able to dislodge ice plugs in the gutter downspouts.  New England, December 2013 - Page 2 43549

She's just perfect despite the pyrethrin episode...probably a little bored at having to stay indoors today.  New England, December 2013 - Page 2 Photo_18

Once there was an admission that we had snow here, the weather forcast was for flurries off and on all day, but someone forgot to install the 'off' switch.  Wink  Actually, it's been beautiful watching the gentle flakes whenever we look out a window.

Thanks for asking.   santa

Only one Roma tomato left growing in the bay window.  After seeing all those photos in the 'coeur de boeuf' thread I finally got a hankering to bite into a fresh tomato.  I'm keeping it!

Its Boxing Day (Dec 26th) and more snow on the way here in Maine.  Over the ice-covered roads and snowbanks, we're getting more snow.
New England, December 2013 - Page 2 Penny_10
See the snow piling up on Penny's back.  She has a thick double coat so the snow sits on top of her coat.  But notice, too, my Rosemary bush is doing great even after all the freezing days and nites we've had.  Its a survivor.
I can't get the next picture to post so I'll be back.

On a more pleasant note, I have two very red Redskin sweet peppers from the plant I brought indoors in the fall.
New England, December 2013 - Page 2 12-26-11
They'll go good with a a rib eye steak that I got for Xmas.  Would you believe my good friend gave me some lovely rib eyes for Xmas.  Since I'm a beef and potatoes type person, it was a pleasant surprise.  I'll be harvesting these babies in the next few days.
Hope you are all indoors and warm during this cold New England Winter.

For my good SFG friends,  be sure to check out the thread I posted today "Free seeds 2014 from Ray at Praxxus (utube)"
He's giving away free seeds once again and you'll have to send in your envelope before the end of Jan. to get them.
He does this every year.  Free seeds.  Enjoy.

Tod's photos are fantastic, Camp. Thanks for the link.

QB, your peppers - WOW!  Isn't is fun to have summer veggies growing now?!? I have one Roma left that I plan on biting into for New Years.

What a beautiful day today here on the Cape - humid & no breeze at all, so it feels even warmer than it is: New England, December 2013 - Page 2 100_1215

This is the calm before the storm apparently.  So I got a lot of errands done this morning & decided to hit the beach on the way home - SCORE! New England, December 2013 - Page 2 100_1216
Three buckets of seaweed!  I dumped it all onto my compost pile but haven't mixed it in yet...maybe later...or not: New England, December 2013 - Page 2 100_1217

Then I harvested these kale & collards from the outside kitchen garden for my lunch time smoothie: New England, December 2013 - Page 2 100_1218Everyone at work is so sick that I need all the nutrients I can get!  Rolling Eyes

The SFG continues to grow here and there despite not being covered.  It's no less than amazing to me!  What a Face  New England, December 2013 - Page 2 100_1219
There's quite a bit of Swiss Chard in there but since I'm eating raw lately I don't want it since it has to be cooked.  So I'll let it grow some more, if that's possible with the freezing weather coming.

There are 3 squares of carrots left.  Here are 2 of them: New England, December 2013 - Page 2 100_1220
I'm thinking I should cover them with a transparent tray, like a lettuce container or something, to try to keep the MM from freezing.

The old school SFG's under woodchips are snug as a bug in a rug: New England, December 2013 - Page 2 100_1222
The left side has the experimental taters - Yukon Gold, Red Bliss, Russet -  in it to see if they'll grow come spring despite being in there all winter.

And here are the strawberries, covered a bit with leaves and pine needles.  They look so pretty in their fall colors: New England, December 2013 - Page 2 100_1221

 Very Happy

Well, that's all I got, kids.  Whatcha all up to?

Cape, I envy you your green garden but since I don't care for kale or collards, I'm not depressed.  I just like seeing the green.
I'm waiting for another 7" plus of more snow today.  Where is it all coming from before the new year.  I'm flabbergasted with all this cold and snow we've been having.
I'm hibernating for the rest of the day.  I hope everyone is snuggled in.

I too am waiting for inclement weather. The plan is to do a bit of work on my bee school plans then I am going to give my new pasta machine a whirl, and maybe take a gander at my first seed catalog from Territorial Seeds. Wish my FEDCO catalog would show up...  What a Face

I also need to make yogurt.

It's ok by me. Those days of severe cold can stay away. Snow is ok, but not more than a foot at a time. Sleet and freezing rain, I don't like at all.

I love my new pasta machine! Making cranberry, orange chocolate chip cookies now.

Molly, what flavor ice cream are you making? I so love homemade ice cream and sorbet and gelato and italian ice...  What a Face
