New to the Forum and SFG

Hi there, pleased to find this support group 


I bought Mel's updated book on Kindle a couple of weeks ago and have begun sfg in squat little tubs as hubby wasn't interested in building my garden! To be fair, in a rental property, so tubs are easier to move in the future. We've moved from Southland to South Canterbury, and I can't believe how much warmer it is up here - its only Spring but we've had Summer-like weather. 


I've planted corn, buttercrunch lettuce and carrots (an heirloom variety I think, was given to me, saved from last season. The seeds look like little hairy bugs). I've got True Lavender and Chilean Guava/NZ Cranberry in sfg tubs. My mama gave me another crown of her rhubarb, and next year I'll replant the strawberries into sfg tubs and use their current big buckets for potatoes.


I bought a pack of 6 Early Girl tomatoes thinking they went 4 to a square...oops. I'll need to make more Mel's Mix! I plan to add onions and peas and cucumber and zucchini, and get enough buckets to plant fortnightly successions of carrots and onions. 


I've had a look at the 'corn' topic - anyone here grown them the sfg way? I got the impression I'll need to give them another trowel of compost during the season, or is that unnecessary due to the set up of Mel's Mix? Also, if the stalks only produce one ear each, should you remove the weaker ears so the plant can focus into the strongest one?

Emjay,  Welcome to the Forum!   

Rambo is in Australia and is currently growing corn.  Check out his topic "My Table Top Project Down Under."  Silver Queen produces more than one ear per plant.  Plant 4/square.  I have never heard of anyone removing ears of corn to only have one per plant.  I am too new to give you advise on extra compost, but my "impression" is that they will appreciate extra compost.

Welcome! There is so much information in past threads, when I first started, every time I had a question I just searched and had almost every answer waiting for me.

SFG is such a wonderful system once you get it going. It's pretty much all play and no work, LOL!

Oops!  Apparently, that wasn't the 'right way' to repy!  ;-)   I'm not quite sure what happened there, but anyway..... 

Just reaching out to say 'hi' from Christchurch, NZ, and see if you're still active on this forum, Emjay.  I'd love to know how you're getting on with SFG. :-)   I'm just about to start down that (garden) path. :-)

Sally Lawson from Christchurch.  You must be in full summer mode there and heading into fall., while here in Canada we are in winter mode and  heading toward spring.
