transplanting carrots?
keepercjr - I will be interested in the results from transplanting carrots. I thought it couldn't be done, that they would get all wonky. I might try with some of ours.

Re: California - What are you doing this month?
Sanderson I'm sorry about your cukes! Did you transplant them? They are sensitive to transplanting and disturbing their roots. Mine are doing fine and have been in the ground for a month now. They haven't grown a ton but I know they are busy "down below" with root development.
Kauairosina (we LOVE Kauai by the way - the kids think it is their 2nd home since we have gone every year for the last 5 - except this year). The transplanted carrots are coming along just fine. I guess the final test will be when they are pulled!

Re: California - What are you doing this month?
Hi Keeper, They were all grown from seed and up-potted. When I finally put them in the MM, the weather was warm, but the soil was still cold and wet. We added a third layer of 2" x 4"s (for appearance) and I think that created part of the problem with the sun hitting the MM. The neighbor's trees have also grown taller since this time last year. I just planted 4 spares so we will see if they survive. DH may have to take off the top row of wood until I have lots of extra compost to raise the soil level to the top of the 3 layers.
I'm pretty careful with transplanting. Everything else is doing fine (except for 2 cantaloupes in perpetual shade from the winter carrots and garlic). And Cantaloupes were what I really wanted this summer what with the new boxes and trellises.

Yes, lovely rain - but looking at the long term forecast, it doesn't look like there's much more coming
if anyone is coming to Kauai - ever
Please give me a notice. I would love to meet anyone else on this wonderful forum.

Re: California - What are you doing this month?
My sister lives on Kauai. I can only imagine how fun it would be to garden there as things grow so rapidly. We don't have any plans right now to visit her, but if we do I'll be in touch!kauairosina wrote:Please give me a notice. I would love to meet anyone else on this wonderful forum.
How nice to know
Yes, things grow rapidly on Kauai and we are incredibly fortunate. However, the bugs and all also thrive so it is a different kind of challenge here. We just had to pull out two beautiful squash plants because the mildew devastated them. If it wasn't them it would be the fruit fly, etc, etc, etc. Not complaining. Every place has its challenges as is apparent from this forum.
On what part of Kauai does your sister garden? It would be so lovely to have another person from Hawaii participate in this forum. We certainly have our unique problems.

Re: California - What are you doing this month?
She's a realtor. I'm not even sure whether her husband and she take care of their garden or my guess is they have a gardener as they're both busy professionals.
My garden serves to get me out of my computer chair and away from my painting desk. I can easily work a 12 hour day (especially this time of year when my agents are preparing for the biggest shows of the year). I get up 4 or 5 times a day and putter in my garden. My back love me for it

Re: California - What are you doing this month?
DH and I just picked up two 33-gallon containers of pure, fresh horse poop and almost two 33-gallon containers of lambing straw bedding with manure. What a source!
I am sooo jealous
My grand daughter gleans horse poop from our adjoining neighbor but only a small amount - like one small bucket. My friend in Koke`e (our mountains) gets lots from one horse to grow lovely tomato plants. We want more poop!!

Beautiful pictures Sanderson - you guys are always about 3 weeks ahead of us. When I lived at 3500 ft elevation you guys were 6 weeks ahead of us. I would always be amazed at how many flowers there were, but then, our green grass lasted a lot longer too!
By the way, most of my plants made it through the hail/freeze, though some by the skin of their teeth so to speak!

We never got the hail. That was guaranteed since I covered everything! I'm glad your plants made it through.
This morning, we picked up fresh horse manure and used hay sheep straw bedding from Fresno State. The lambs were only hours old and they looked so fragile and sweet. No wonder the lamb is such a perfect symbol.

Beautiful pix, Sanderson! Can't wait till my garden looks like that!
Ended up picking up some heirloom tomato plants the other night. Got planted yesterday along with everything else I had started.
Starting more today!

What am I doing this month? I'm declaring it open season for gopher hunting and trapping. In the last 24 hours I've trapped 4 pocket gophers from the same tunnel. They seem to love the scent of peanut butter, but as their palates get more refined I'll change the menu up and start using fresh bread to lure them in. I have a recycling system worked out with two resident hawks- they get to munch the gophers that I've caught- I just leave them out in the field for them. I think I'm going to be busy this year!

Natural Recycling center!
My DH went on a gopher rampage at one of our rentals. It reminded me of Chevy Chase! The gophers were winning! He finally broke down and got a professional exterminator.

I'm mulching today with the 80* weather anticipated next week! I can't believe I still have a few squares left to plant.
Re: California - What are you doing this month?
It's getting pretty hot where I am too- more veggies bolting as I write. Looks like the broccoli blossoms are all I'm going to get. Just pulled out some massive beets that I've been overlooking; my wife took one look at them and said that I'd have to cook them If I wanted to eat them. Anyone out there know how to bake a 6" round beet?

how to bake large beet
Just the way you bake a smaller one, just longer. Might consider steaming instead, for moisture.

Re: California - What are you doing this month?
Would slicing it in 1/2 or 1/4 help get these softball-ball sized beets cooked any faster? Does anyone have a formula for baking these by weight, or should I wing it?
