Is anyone else tired of this freezing/warm weather fluctuating?  How has it affected your fall garden?

We had a hard wind and it blew off my plastic cover so I lost my beans - but before that I got a nice harvest from them.

I think the kale flavor will improve from the cold snap though.

I have different types of lettuce growing in my garden boxes that are growing well.
I also have snap peas which I have been harvesting a few a day.
Beets and carrots are still growing but the weather may not be beneficial.
Only time will tell.
For the weekend we are visiting my grandsons and family in Upstate NY. When we left NJ and arrived in NY on Wed. evening the weather was rainy but 61 degrees.
We woke up Thurs. morning to 42 degrees and still rain.......possible snow showers tom.... the weather is apparently a lot warmer in NJ.

I only have snap peas growing on a trellis. When we got that first freeze about 2 weeks ago it killed two of my 10 plants. So I made a 'slip cover' for them for those frosty nights. I have a few plants with blooms and maybe a couple of peas growing. I did them once in the spring my first year and they did great. However, gardening during the fall seems to be a bit challenging so far. We are forecasted to have freezes for the next 4-5 nights so we'll see who wins, me or the weather.

This past season I worked my can off getting my beds ready for SFG. even converted a large cold frame for winter crops...
Heck with it all, I'm gonna do winter in front of my fireplace...
I will, however continue to work my compost piles.
Their coming along nicely and I sure love composting.

Why are you giving up on your cold frame for winter gardening, Jimmy?

I understand what Jimmy is feeling. In zone 5 and colder, it comes to a point where things just won't grow unless there is artificial heat. I extend my season a bit with a hoop, but by the middle of November, it's just too dang cold to keep at it and the ground soon freezes hard as rock.

To everything there is a season. I'm going to put more pellets in my stove now. Mid-At: Nov 2013 - Fluctuating Temps Sleepcampfire
