Fall garden is about 70% in:

cauliflower: 24 squares
brusels sprouts: 8 squares
green cabbage: 16 squares
red cabbage: 4 squares
beets: 30 squares (beets not looking good)
carrots: 12 squares (some not doing...critters keep digging up the seedlings)
lettuce: 15 squares
spinach: 8 squares and counting - empty squares get seedlings started in flats.
garlic: 1 square with 7 more to go in this week.

fall brussels sprouts, spinach, cauliflower, and a volunteer black eyed susan.

Beautiful! We just got our first cool weather today, it's amazing how quickly some of the plants have picked up and started growing.

I tried to start some of my fall plantings in August and September but we're just too hot and they didn't sprout.

I kill 5-6 cabbage worm butterflies every day...and many more escape. I have plenty of squares and we plan on sharing produce with family this fall...and I've been told that cauliflower can be used as a substitute for mashed potatoes...may give that a try. Other family members are wanting cabbage to make home-made sauerkraut.

the cole crops tend to wilt during the heat of the day but the recent cool weather has them looking really, really good...now to keep the cabbage worm butterflies away and hope heads form soon.

Your so correct on the wilting during the day, then coming to life when the sun goes down.
I once thought those little white butterflies were so cute..ha ha.
Finally have I found what is tearing up, my swiss chard, kohlrabi, broccoli, etc etc.
How do you kill them ? I don't think my legs would enjoy running after them with a butterfly net... Very Happy

I've never been this far into growing season, due to SFG I may even enter my winter growing yet inside my cold frame.

jimmy, up until yesterday I would just run around the garden and yard and try to smash them right out of the air with a ball cap.

Then I found something yesterday that was pretty interesting. After killing one, I stuck the butterfly into a crack in a piece of wood right near the garden and left the wings out to flutter in the wind. Now, chances are that when I go out to check, there are 4-5 butterflies right on that wood...maybe trying to mate with the dead one...they don't fly away when I approach and I can smash them all with one swoop of the ball cap without having to run around.

I was thinking about printing off a few cabbage worm butterfly pics off the web and laminating them to put around the garden...the dead ones get a little beaten up with the wind, sun, and dew.

Tulle or other fine netting are great excluders.

We have used cauliflower for that and for a recipe my kids called "mock-aroni" It's a macaroni and cheese recipe substituting cauliflower for the pasta. I believe both were found at the Atkins website www.atkins.com I believe. I don't have the recipes, my daughter does. I'll see if I can get it from her tomorrow.

Both were great!

That sounds so watery! I guess I'd have to taste it to believe it was a good idea. Is the cauliflower pre-baked or something to lessen the water content?

Cauliflower & cheese is made by lightly boiling the cauli and draining it off then following the various recipes.
If it is too dry and crunchy boil the next one a bit longer and use a fork to check the tenderness then drain off when suitable.

If you want slush just boil it to death to remove all the food value and then use it in a recipe. Laughing

Hi landarch. It looks like you have chives growing with your carrots. I do too. I've heard they deter carrot flies and improve the taste of the carrots. I'm new to planting carrots. I wanted to ask if you planted them together for the reasons I just mentioned. Have you noticed a difference with companion planting chives?

I usually plant parsley and cilantro next to my carrots...did not know about chives. The chives I have in the pic are just a division of a clump that was getting too big for the SFG. I plant chives mostly for the gorgeous flower...and I use the greens in scrambled eggs and omelets.
