Oh, Papa, the garden is a delight. And so are the girls! Green lights playing off the overhead foliage, clean gravel paths with fairy lighting, seating, productive garden, etc.
Re: papas garden
Thank you Sanderson, it's a ton of fun to show the girls how things grow...we're about to steam a pumpkin now and make homemade pumpkin bread... great for a cold, last night of Summer, here in the SF Bay Area.

Just wondering?
Your garden and "little growers" are beautiful!
Just had a question...I've often thought of adding solar lights around my s.f. garden, but wondered if I would attract too many moths? (Don't really need any MORE insects--I'm in Montgomery, AL)

Re: papas garden
Thank you Sparrow... all lights are solar in my garden, even the string lights. The only exception are the green spot lights in the back, those are LED bulbs that use little energy and I purchased them online. I have not had an issue with moths, I have heard that the oregeno and rosemary keeps them away... natural bug repellant.

Re: papas garden
Thank you everyone for your kind words. I used compost in my soil, have a red wiggler bin, which works great for the kitchen scraps. I also fed veggies with bone meal every month. The meal works really well with tomatoes, some were nearly 3 lbs. I'll try to find a picture.

Re: papas garden
Are you using Mel's Mix? What was in your compost if you don't mind me asking. I will put some bone meal on our beds too, it sure seems to have worked for you!! Re: papas garden
Hi Southern Gardener, I'm using "organic traditions" bone meal. My compost is made up of all of my kitchen scraps except citrus, meat or dairy. I also mix in dried leaves, coffee grounds, wet paper towels old bread and brown paper bags. I use all our egg shells to balance the PH. The worms are very happy. The best part is the "worm tea"... that is basically worm pee and I mix that with 5 parts water in a watering can... they really like that. I'll have to post a photo of my worms when it's light out.

Re: papas garden
Thank you for the great info! A couple more questions if it's OK What is the worm "pee" do you mean the liquid that drains from your worm composter? Also, did you add peat moss and vermiculite to your mix (in other words, Mel's Mix), or just your straight compost? I have a worm composter going. I just cleared out all the worms, and have a pretty nice sized pail of pure castings...so, I'd love to know how to use them most effectively! thanks again for your beautiful pics and info!!papasgarden wrote:Hi Southern Gardener, I'm using "organic traditions" bone meal. Re: papas garden
Hi SouthernGardener,
I don't mind the questions at all, keep them coming, because one day, I'm sure I'll return the favor. I do not add peat moss, just the organic compost to my existing soil, which is somewhat balanced already (boxes have been set up for some time). Yes, worm tea is the pee from my worm bin. I have a "worm factory" that collected the pee on the bottom and the spot makes it easy to pour in container. ;-). I sprayed it on the tomato vines and also added some to the plant base.
Here's a good shot.

Re: papas garden
OK...i think I understand. So it doesn't sound like it's Mels Mix, but pure compost? Sounds like it working! way to go. Your worm "pee" sounds like leachate, (sp??) instead of compost tea? I am going to try and make some compost tea out of my pure worm castings, and apply it to my plants. I have some medical issues I have to take care of, and then hope to get going again soon! thank you for the great info and the beautiful pics!!papasgarden wrote:Hi SouthernGardener,
