Can't find straw in this town
What would you use if you couldn't find straw (or even hay) as a covering for strawberries and garlic this winter?

I covered my tabletop strawberries last year with pine needles or pine straw, and they did fine. Oops, I'm not certain if you meant wheat straw or pine straw.

Just found this feed store in your location ....perhaps they will know where you can get your straw at source or they might be able to point you to a horse ranch /stables etc. that sells it.

I put Elizabeth city NC USA + horse feed merchants into my search engine .

Pine straw I can get. Thanks.llama momma wrote:I covered my tabletop strawberries last year with pine needles or pine straw, and they did fine. Oops, I'm not certain if you meant wheat straw or pine straw.

Even the Tractor Supply doesn't carry hay or straw. I was sure the big nursery in town would have it, but no. Feed store wasn't open today. Will try there tomorrow.

Kay, I didn't see garlic in your original post. I covered garlic with leaves and will use it again this year.

If there are any pumpkin lots in your area - they often have straw bales as props or for seating. You might be able to buy some off of them when they're done with them.

Try Craigslist - there are quite a few listings in NC, just not sure what might be close to you. After Halloween I often see listings in my area for free or nearly free straw.

Re: Can't find straw in this town
We went to the "Back to Eden" garden in Washington State. Paul recommended covering strawberries with wood chips. He does his every winter and the older mother plants die off, while the younger healthier ones popped up through the chips. His plants were amazing! he even had a guy stomp through his plants to show us how sturdy they were. We are going to try it this year. We are in So. Calif, so we don't have the harsh winters like he does....

Found out I am too early. The local feed store is getting some in late next week.
