I had a number of leaves covered with these critters - which I cut and discard in a sealed plastic bag in the trash.  I took a picture of a single one to try to find out what it is so I can treat it properly.  Any idea of what I am dealing with and the best way to get it gone?

It's an Eggplant Lace Bug. See this link: http://www.organicgardeninfo.com/eggplant-lace-bug.html

Thanks - I looked up ways to control the bug and Neem and insecticidal soap are both suggested. Our temps are around 100F these days and neither of the applications recommend their use over 80F. Does anyone have a suggestion for a treatment (other than hand removal) that I can safely use in the heat of a Texas summer?

I can try hand removal but due to some health issues, I can't bend over for very long without actually sort of keeling over. Knees are bad, so kneeling is out of the question.

OK...don't laugh but here goes. hiddenID  Yesterday, my turnips were CRAWLING with Bagrada bugs. Haven't seen them since last year, then BOOM. I searched the internet for treatment, and it said neem and sluggo plus weren't effective. thinking  I got my hand held vacuum and suck them off the plant! I put the long extension on so I could get them before they ran off! I sucked up probably close to 100 of those little suckers! Went out about an hour later and found a few more. Hour later, couldn't find ANY! I'll still look for them, but it worked!! rofl

Love it! Now that's organic pest removal - LOL!!!

Wish I would have thought of that for the harlequin bug infestation on our broccoli. One day it was one or two of them and before I knew it there were hundreds. Pretty bug, nasty smell when disturbed (they're in the stink bug family). I may have to vacuum up some powdered freshener first!

I can just here the comments from the neighbors now! They already think we're nuts for using a syringe to inject our squash stems. What a Face

Believe me, I looked to see if any neighbors were out! Embarassed  lol. I just checked again, and found two, but I was able to hand squash them. I could not believe my eyes when the turnips were literally crawling with them! They were all doing the "dirty" too if you get my drift Cool  It's amazing how quickly a pest can infiltrate your garden. Well, off to clean out my vacuum What a Face What a Face

I think the Bagrada bug is part of the harlequin family also? not positive but I'm sure it would have worked. I did all the plants in about 3 minutes!!

Rose, our puppy goes crazy chasing the cabbage moths! He'll FLY out the back door if he sees one, the problem is, he jumps in the beds sometimes in his excitement Shocked

I don't know if it would work on aphids? They are kind of "sticky", but sure wouldn't hurt to try! I've tried spraying them with water, and all I end up with is powdery mildew AND aphids. Not doing that anymore. I've had really good luck with Neem oil on the aphids.

I'll try the hand vac method and see if it works. They seem kind of sticky so I'm not sure. If nothing else, I'll wait until almost dusk and spray the plants with Neem. That way the sun won't fry them until tomorrow. It has been really hot. My cukes love it but the pole beans I planted a couple of weeks ago are now a distant memory. I'm waiting another two weeks to try to plant them again. This is my first summer with SFG, so I wasn't sure quite what to expect.

I'm going to start looking like a hydrogen peroxide groupie or nut case, but I have been getting some good results

Hydrogen Peroxide for Garden Bug Spray
By Ruth O'Neil, eHow Contributor
http://www.ehow.com/info_10018522_hydrogen-peroxide-garden-bug-spray.html

This article on eHow seemed helpful.  Higher temperatures speed the rate of the breakdown of H2O2 in releasing oxygen, so it may not be as big a problem as Neem or other products.  I would try some on a single leaf first before spraying the whole plant.  The temperatures here have been in the mid to high 80s for the last  week and my eggplants seem happy with the H2O2 I've sprayed on alternate days to get rid of powdery mildew and a mosaic virus.

2 oz 3% H2O2 from the drugstore to 1 gallon of water in a hand sprayer.  That's the concentration for problems.  Maintenance dosages are half that strength.

Hope this helps,

Maria

This statement tells me very little.
What were your troubles and what are the improvements?

Sorry Camp -- didn't mean to be vague

Here's how things are going so far, despite a very rainy week when I expected to lose everything to powdery mildew again.

1) Signs of powdery mildew and mosaic virus have receded and affected plants have new growth. This includes on beets.

It was too late for the first blocks of green beans and yellow bush beans; they just died. Green beans across a 3 foot aisle are on the mend. Early signs of infection have stopped, new growth and a whole bunch of new beans have appeared since I started this just over a week ago.

I've had similar results with the powdery mildew that went after my pumpkins and squash.

The blight that started to attack my tomatoes is gone. It stopped spreading and I have cut all the tainted leaves with no new appearances.

2) Whatever was eating my sunflowers and green peppers has backed off. They're having another growth spurt and flowers have started to open.

3) Plants without problems, my eggplants, lettuce, and Swiss chard, all seem to be happier with increased new growth.

I work hard at not confusing coincidence with causality. I am a skeptic by nature and training (CPA), so I will continue using the H2O2 weekly and see how things go. I'll post as results come in.

Update on my "vacuuming" experience. I have seen about 5 since then, and was able to hand smash them. SO, I think it worked! WAY faster and IME more effective than spraying Smile bugs on my eggplants - can you help identify this creature? 931411784
