What I saw in the Garden this morning

I just wanted to share what I witnessed in my tiny back yard this morning.

On my first cup of coffee, of course, and the usual hummingbirds were visiting the feeder.  One finished at the feeder and flew right over to the tomatillas and visited the little yellow flowers!  I've never witnessed them visiting the tomatillas before! On a side note for my hummingbird visitors, if the feeder is out, they fly over and face me, like they are saying, "Dummy, the feeder is EMPTY."

Immediately after the hummingbird took off, a mockingbird landed on my clothes line.  I shooed 'him' away and he flew 10 feet, landed on the overhead 2 x 4" supporting the 8-9 feet tall Roma, and promptly hopped onto the tomato plant.  I started to shoo him away but he already had what he wanted!  A nice green caterpillar!   

DH and I love mockingbirds in other people's yards.  I think it is the male who puts on an entertaining show: sing complex songs, hover up and down on the top of a tall tree, like he is trying to attract a mate??  We don't like them in the back yard because they and the blue jays used to dive bomb the cat without mercy, which is a negative thing.  But, this summer, with SFG crowding the backyard, the cat has lots of cool hiding places so the mockingbirds have left her alone.  Yeah SFG!  And with catching the horned worm, I have to soften my feelings about them visiting.

Now if you can let that mockinbird know to only go after the bugs and not what you are growing, you will be set!  That is so cool that you witnessed him getting the caterpiller!
