I have plants that I have started indoors, under lights.  Can they be planted outdoors right away or do they need to be adjusted to the heat first?

Adjusted, the sun will cook them if you don't.  Start them in the shade and gradually increase the sun time.

Which plants are you trying to transplant?

I have a crapload of tomato plants.  I have been putting them out with a sheet as shade and watering the heck out of them and they seem to be adjusting well.  I will move them to 50% shade cloth soon.

If they're acclimating already under the shade cloth - good luck.  I might try transplanting half now and half in a month to see, for future reference, which is the better transplanting time.

I usually start my tomatoes around Jan 1st and transplant a week or two before March 1st depending on frost likelihood. I get a spring crop of tomatoes and a shorter fall crop of tomatoes.  Keep me posted!
